O Plata O Plomo?: Silver or Lead? (Spanish Edition)

Told in first person by someone who was there, this is the story of the kidnapping of DEA Special Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena and of the failed attempt to find and rescue him. It is also the story of the grim discovery of his body, along with that of his friend, Alfredo Zavala, and of the oft times thwarted chase of the major narcotics traffickers believed to be responsible for this murder. The Mexican government’s bizarre cover-ups are not so easily explained. It is an almost unbelievable true story of crime and corruption.

Samantha Bee Bets On Adorable Puppies To Reconcile Bernie And Hillary’s Feuding Supporters

Samantha Bee has a plan to reunite warring liberals. And it involves pictures of puppies and cute kittens.

The “Full Frontal” host says the bickering between supporters of Democratic presidential candidates Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Hillary Clinton in recent weeks has “ruined” the Internet.

So, in a bid to stop the “Democrat on Democrat violence” that’s been taking over people’s social media feeds, Bee’s team have created a new website:

TotallyObjectivePoliticalFacts.org.

Clicking on the link brings up a picture of an adorable animal, alongside a salient quote — such as, “Why can’t we all just get long?”

“Just post that link in any thread where your liberal friends are tearing each other apart and end the argument,” Bee said in a YouTube clip on Thursday.

“Seriously, Democrats, just look at a picture of a puppy and hug it out before it’s too late,” she added — as a picture of Donald Trump flashed up on the screen.

Check it out in the clip above.

Mutant Superbug Has Been Discovered In The U.S.

A mutant strain of E. coli, resistant to even the toughest antibiotics, has been found in the United States, federal health officials said Thursday.

The bacteria, discovered last month in a 49-year-old Pennsylvania woman with a urinary tract infection, contains a gene known as mcr-1, making it resistant even to colistin, a decades-old antibiotic that has increasingly been used as a treatment of last resort against dangerous superbugs.

The discovery — the first time the strain has been found inside the U.S. — “heralds the emergence of truly pan-drug resistant bacteria,” according to a report released Thursday by Department of Defense researchers. The woman, now recovered, has a military connection, authorities said without elaborating.

The woman hadn’t traveled outside the U.S. in the previous five months, according to the report. Doctors treated the infection using another antibiotic, but said they were alarmed by the discovery of the mcr-1 gene inside the U.S.

“The fear is that this could spread to other bacteria and create the bacterium that would be resistant to everything,” Dr. Beth Bell, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases, told ABC News.

“The more we look at drug resistance, the more concerned we are,” Dr. Tom Frieden, CDC director, said Thursday. “The medicine cabinet is empty for some patients. It is the end of the road for antibiotics unless we act urgently.”

At least 2 million people become infected in the U.S. each year with antibiotic-resistant bacteria, according to the CDC. Those infections result in at least 23,000 deaths annually.

The Pennsylvania woman’s case, while not deadly, is the first U.S. discovery in a human of bacteria resistant to colistin, a drug held in reserve to treat serious infections that resist another major class of antibiotics called carbapenems. Bacteria that could resist colistin and carbapenems would be unstoppable, according to The New York Times.

In a study last year, the CDC warned that drug-resistant infections would continue to rise. And while the medical community has been anticipating the strain’s arrival, the troubling part is that “this case seems completely home-grown,” according to Dr. Nasia Safdar, an associate professor of infectious diseases at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health.

Multi-drug-resistant bacteria are found elsewhere in the world, frequently in agriculture. This particular colistin-resistant strain, for instance, was first discovered in people and livestock in China in November 2015. Since then, it has turned up in Europe and Canada. The U.S. Department of Agriculture said Thursday it had detected the bacteria in a single sample of a domestic pig’s intestine.

When it comes to spreading resistant bacteria, “food-producing animals are of particular concern,” the CDC says. “Antibiotics must be used judiciously in humans and animals because both uses contribute to the emergence, persistence, and spread of resistant bacteria.”

The CDC, Defense Department and Pennsylvania Department of Health are working to identify close contacts of the Pennsylvania woman to determine if others have also been exposed to the bacteria. Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf (D) said his administration was taking the discovery “very seriously” and promised to “take necessary actions to prevent mcr-1 from becoming a widespread problem with potentially serious consequences.”

Corporate America Stood Up For LGBT Rights. So Why Is It Supporting A Platform For Donald Trump?

When North Carolina passed a law in March effectively sanctioning LGBT discrimination, corporate America turned up the heat on the Tar Heel State.

More than 90 CEOs and other top business executives signed a letter to North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory (R) denouncing the law and warning that it would “diminish the state’s draw as a destination for tourism, new businesses, and economic activity.”

Some major companies, including PayPal, Google Venture, Braeburn Pharmaceuticals and Lionsgate Entertainment, put their money where their mouths were, canceling existing plans for projects in the state or vowing a boycott on future investments.

But many of the same companies are moving forward with their plans to sponsor this summer’s Republican National Convention, where the GOP is expected to nominate Donald Trump, a noted bigot, for president.

Those companies appear to have a higher tolerance for Trump’s outrageous statements and policy proposals regarding Latino immigrants, Muslims, women and President Barack Obama than they do for North Carolina’s anti-LGBT discrimination.

Progressives See Hypocrisy

The apparent inconsistency is not lost on the progressive and civil rights organizations pushing corporations to disown a Republican convention that will nominate a racist demagogue for the presidency.

“It is surprising that we have companies showing up very vocally for certain types of people, but unwilling to let go of access when it comes to supporting a convention for a candidate who has said horrible things about multiple communities of color,” said Arisha Hatch, managing director of campaigns at ColorOfChange Political Action Committee, which has led the charge against corporate backing for the GOP convention.

CREDO Action, which is allied with ColorOfChange PAC in its efforts, blasted a video ad to hundreds of thousands of members earlier this month calling on Google in particular to back out of its plans to sponsor the convention. (Google will be the official live-stream provider of the RNC through YouTube, and says it will contribute other associated services.)

Since that video went out, CREDO members have left more than 1,400 voice mail messages with Google employees asking the company to reconsider its participation. But they have not received responses, according to CREDO.

CREDO singled out Google in part because of the company’s reputation for promoting the “values of diversity and inclusion,” Heidi Hess, a campaign leader for CREDO, said at the time of the video’s release.

Speaking to The Huffington Post this week, Hess called the companies’ willingness to sponsor the Republican convention, despite their opposition to the North Carolina law, “ironic and troubling.”

At the same time, she argued, “it is not surprising that they are able to get over the cognitive dissonance in order to think about their bottom line.”

Silicon Valley Under Scrutiny

Indeed, it’s particularly notable that so many Silicon Valley firms and other tech giants are supporting the Republican convention, because many of them enjoy a socially liberal reputation, and virtually all of them spoke out against the North Carolina law.

Executives from Google, Twitter, Facebook, Cisco Systems and Microsoft all signed the letter condemning H.B. 2, North Carolina’s anti-LGBT law. All of those companies plan to sponsor the GOP’s convention in Cleveland this July.

Aside from Google, it’s not exactly clear what the companies will be doing for the convention, but in various statements to HuffPost they characterized their contributions as in-kind donations of technology and other services.

They also justified their participation on the grounds that they plan to contribute similarly to the Democratic National Convention, which will be held this July in Philadelphia. Several companies argued that contributing to both conventions helps promote democracy. The language in the various statements is remarkably similar.

“Twitter works with both major political parties and we will support both national conventions, in order to promote civic engagement and democratic participation,” a Twitter spokesperson said in a statement.

“Facebook is supporting both the Republican and Democratic conventions in a similar manner and without endorsing any one candidate, issue, or political party,” a Facebook spokesperson said in a statement. “We believe encouraging this ongoing conversation is important because an informed debate about the candidates and the issues is essential to the democratic process.”

One of the things I have found in my activism work … is that there is an extreme amount of discomfort around race in Silicon Valley.
Arisha Hatch, ColorOfChange PAC

“As a company, we have provided in-kind contributions equally to both the Democratic and Republican convention since 2000,” Nigel Glennie, a Cisco Systems spokesman, said in a statement. “Our support is not for a specific policy, candidate, or party, and is driven by our belief that these are historic moments in the selection of the next President of the United States.”

Microsoft referred HuffPost to an April 29 blog post on the topic by Fred Humphries, the company’s corporate vice president of U.S. government affairs.

“First, we act in a bipartisan manner and provide similar levels of support to both conventions,” Humphries wrote. “Second, we make a special effort, as do many companies in our industry, to provide the conventions with technology tools to help enable this part of the American democratic process to operate efficiently and accurately. And third, we do not endorse either political party or its nominee.”

While Google did not provide any new comments for this article, it offered an explanation earlier this month that resembles the other companies’ statements. A spokesperson described Google’s role in the Republican convention as simply expanding access to the event for people who can’t attend in person.

Google has not yet announced sponsorship plans for the Democratic National Convention, but it has supported both party gatherings in previous years.

PayPal, which canceled plans to build an operations center in Charlotte, North Carolina, in response to the passage of H.B. 2, did not immediately respond to a request for information about its participation in the convention.

Hewlett-Packard and Xerox, whose executives signed the letter condemning the North Carolina law, also did not respond to requests for comment. LinkedIn, another signatory, declined to comment for this story.

A law passed in 2014 eliminated federal funding for the party-run convention committees, increasing pressure on the parties to raise funds elsewhere. Although the party-run committees cannot receive direct cash contributions from corporations, they can receive in-kind contributions of the type being provided by Google, Facebook, Twitter, Cisco and Microsoft.

Contrary to those companies’ professed goal of promoting democracy, however, the in-kind gifts are technically only legal if the companies view their contributions as ordinary business deals in which the promotional value or other benefit of providing a free service offsets or outweighs the financial cost.

Twitter works with both major political parties and we will support both national conventions, in order to promote civic engagement and democratic participation.
Twitter spokesperson

The progressive organizations pressuring companies not to participate in the Republican convention are not accepting the companies’ explanations.

Hatch said the corporations’ pleas that they support both parties’ conventions are just “an excuse being used by companies attempting to buy influence and access at any cost.”

“What we have been saying to companies we talk to is that this is not just business as usual,” Hatch said. “It is not ordinary politics. We disagreed with Mitt Romney’s policies, but we were not knocking on Silicon Valley’s door asking them not to give money to a convention that nominated him.”

Hatch suggested that Silicon Valley’s reluctance to take a stand may reflect a larger problem with racial sensitivity in the industry, whose workers are overwhelmingly white and Asian.

“One of the things I have found in my activism work, whether it is a campaign about increasing diversity on the staff of tech companies or against the use of algorithms targeting race in inappropriate ways, is that there is an extreme amount of discomfort around race in Silicon Valley,” Hatch said.

Slow Progress For A Boycott Movement

ColorOfChange PAC launched a petition in March demanding that corporations withdraw from the Republican National Convention. The petition ultimately garnered more than 830,000 signatures.

CREDO and other like-minded national groups joined ColorOfChange PAC, either as part of the petition drive or in complementary efforts, forming a coalition of 32 groups with the shared goal of depriving the convention of corporate America’s implicit blessing.

Some of the groups, including the Arab American Institute, Muslim Advocates and the National Iranian American Council, were unable to participate in ColorOfChange’s explicitly political petition due to their nonprofit status. Instead, they signed on to a letter to corporations that uses vaguer language. The letter asks companies to refrain from supporting “any political party conventions that engage in bigoted, xenophobic and racist rhetoric that encourages violence.”

The convention host committees, in contrast with the party-run committees, can receive direct cash contributions from corporations. Originally conceived as a way for local businesses to support the conventions, they have gradually morphed into a major backdoor channel for corporate financing of the lavish gatherings.

Emily Lauer, senior director of communications for the Cleveland 2016 host committee, suggested that Trump’s presence on the ticket has had little impact on fundraising thus far.

“Regarding corporate support, we have more than 100 sponsors at this time, and we have received a variety of comments from those who have chosen not to support the Cleveland host committee,” Lauer said. “A very small number have specifically noted the candidate landscape as the reason.”

Lauer acknowledged that one company has withdrawn a pledged contribution since Trump secured the nomination, but she declined to say which one.

The host committees are not required to disclose their donors until 60 days after the convention occurs.

Despite the hesitation of many top companies to buck the GOP, representatives of the progressive coalition argue that their efforts are beginning to yield fruit.

What happens when you write off that share of the market? It is a risk to the business.
Alyssa Katz, corporate political activism expert

The groups claim credit, for example, for declines in contributions by Microsoft and Coca-Cola. (Coca-Cola’s president also signed the letter condemning North Carolina’s law.)

Although Microsoft decided not to make direct cash contributions this year, the company in 2012 made donations worth $ 1.5 million, half of them in cash.

Microsoft’s Humphries claimed in the April 29 blog post that the decision about the donations was made in the fall, months before Trump secured the nomination.

Coca-Cola, which was among the companies ColorOfChange specifically targeted in its petition, has reduced its contribution to the host committee for the GOP convention to $ 75,000 this year, after giving $ 660,000 in 2012.

Jennifer Amundsen, a spokeswoman for Coca-Cola, noted that the company would be contributing an identical amount to the Democratic convention in Philadelphia. She ignored the suggestion that outside groups had played any role in the company’s decision.

“Our support helps the host committees run these large events and contributes to local economic development but does not represent an endorsement of any specific party or candidate,” Amundsen said in a statement.

ColorOfChange PAC’s Evan Feeney, though, maintains that activism did influence the two companies, saying their denials don’t “really pass the smell test.”

“If either Coke or Microsoft had made a decision and was moving on they could have said that the minute our campaign started,” Feeney told HuffPost in an email. “Yet they took time to have multiple senior level [officials] on the phone multiple times… to explain what they were deciding and how they were dealing with our campaign.”

So Why Haven’t Activism Groups Had More Success?

It’s not hard to see why companies would be reluctant to pull, or even just reduce, their support for one of the two parties’ conventions. Even if Trump is not elected president, there is a good chance Republicans will maintain control of at least one house of Congress.

Stiffing the GOP at one of its most extravagant fundraisers would likely have consequences for a company’s public policy agenda.

“A lot of members of Congress are affiliated with the convention,” said Lawrence Noble, general counsel of the Campaign Legal Center, a nonprofit. “It becomes a great lobbying opportunity for these companies.”

Alyssa Katz, author of The Influence Machine: The U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the Corporate Capture of American Life, argues that it’s probably Trump supporters, more so than politicians, whom the corporations are afraid of alienating.

“What happens when you write off that share of the market?” Katz said. “It is a risk to the business.”

Facebook, in particular, may be sensitive to backlash, Katz noted, with the company “still reeling” from accusations that its “Trending” topics feature is biased against conservative news.

The movement to boycott North Carolina was so successful because the LGBT community is “so well organized and the issue is so specific,” according to Katz, who is also a member of the New York Daily News’ editorial board.

A boycott movement of the kind Trump critics are now launching “may soon catch fire,” she said. “But it is not yet where we are in terms of LGBT rights.”

Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liar, rampant xenophobe, racist, misogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims — 1.6 billion members of an entire religion — from entering the U.S.

What Are You Choosing

Aristotle wrote, “We are what we repeatedly do.

What are you doing repeatedly that is bringing you and others peace and happiness? What are you doing repeatedly that is causing you or others pain? These are very important questions. They have the potential to be life transforming if you are taking action on doing more of what creates the outcomes you desire.

Are you living a virtuous life? Virtues are defined as “behavioral habits – something that is exhibited fairly consistently. You exhibit virtues in the way you act daily, without much thinking.
What virtues are important to you? For me, in my book, Create Your Legacy, I share examples of Love, Generosity, Gratitude and Compassion because these are virtues that were taught to me by my parents and are still important to me today. I try to make a conscious effort to live my life by taking action on these virtues often.

For example, to live with love, I can simply take the hand of someone I love and say, “I love so many things about you. One thing I really love is the fact that you are honest with me; even when, it is not easy.”

Generosity was the domain of the rich or elite nobility for a long time. This definition has changed in the last 200 years to include everyone. The virtue of generosity involves giving unselfishly to help others without expecting anything in return, not even acknowledgement or appreciation.

We can offer a smile, teach what others need to know, lend a helping hand, encourage with our words, listen, give our time, send thank you notes, give a gift card, share coupons, and call and offer to sit with someone at a shelter, mission, hospice or a nursing home.

To live with generosity, I could put $ 5 dollars in my pocket and look for an opportunity to give it to someone in need or to buy a small token, such as a meal, for someone.

Cicero, in Ancient Roman times, believed that gratitude was the “parent of all the other virtues.” Gratitude is the feeling and attitude of appreciation for the benefits that we have received or expect to receive.

We can make it a practice to tell a spouse, partner, child, coworker or friend something we appreciate every day. To live with gratitude, I could buy a flower to give to someone who has been kind to me in the past month. I could express exactly what I am grateful for concerning that person. For example, I could say, “Thank you so much for telling me about that sale. I saved 70% off what I would usually pay for that item.”

Activating the virtue of compassion is what establishes it as the cornerstone of positive social interconnection and humanism. The reward, of treating ourselves and others with compassion is that we feel contented in our hearts knowing that we are helping humanity evolve to greater peace and harmony.

To live with compassion, I could be open to encountering someone in physical or emotional pain and asking, “What are you saying to yourself about the pain?” Then, I could encourage that person to release any negative thoughts surrounding the pain and let the person know that he/she is not alone in pain. That I too, have experienced great pain.

Aristotle wrote, “We are what we repeatedly do. Take a moment today and think about what you are repeatedly doing. Are you living a virtuous life? Are you repeatedly choosing for yourself or others peace, happiness or pain?

Ohio Lawmakers Vote To Allow Limited Medical Marijuana Use

CLEVELAND (Reuters) – Lawmakers in Ohio on Wednesday approved legislation that would legalize marijuana use for medical purposes under certain circumstances, less than a year after recreational marijuana use was soundly defeated by Ohio voters.

The bill, approved by both chambers of the state’s Republican-led legislature, heads to Republican Governor John Kasich for his signature as his office said on Wednesday that he will review the bill.

During the last few years, state legislatures and voters in the United States have been much more receptive to making the use of marijuana legal for medical purposes than for recreational use.

Some 24 states and Washington D.C. currently allow some type of medical marijuana use while only a handful of states allow for recreational use. It remains illegal on the federal level.

The Ohio legislation is more limiting than some in that it only allows patients with specific medical conditions to use an oil, edible, tincture or vapor form of marijuana prescribed by a physician licensed in the state, starting in 2017.

“This bill is not perfect, but it’s what Ohio patients need,” Ohio Senator Kenny Yuko, a Democrat, said before his house approved the bill.

“Marijuana is not a gateway drug, but a gateway off drugs.”

Medical marijuana users would not be allowed to smoke or grow their own marijuana under the measure, which also would create a commission responsible for regulating and licensing of all operations of the drug.

In November, Ohio voters soundly rejected a measure that would have made it the first U.S. Midwestern state to legalize the recreational use of marijuana.

Lawmakers from both parties voted for and against the bill on Wednesday. Some opponents of the measure have said that the qualifying list of medical conditions is too limited.

The measure was fast-tracked to head off a possible less-restrictive medical marijuana ballot initiative in November.

In a poll released in early May, 90 percent of Ohio voters supported the legalization for medical marijuana.

Dem Rep. Totally Nails Why Congress Is Falling Short On Gender, Racial Inequality

“We are neither post-racial nor post-gender,” Rep. Donna Edwards (D-Md.) proclaims in a new essay taking on Congress for not addressing inequality.

One of the major barriers is that America’s elected officials don’t represent the most disenfranchised populations, Edwards argues in the Cosmopolitan magazine piece, published on Tuesday.

“Can we pass equal pay laws and give women control of their own health-care decisions when women represent just 20 percent of Congress?” she says.  Even when women get elected to office, men still hold the large majority of leadership positions, The New York Times pointed out last year.

Edwards, who lost a Senate primary race to Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.), specifically criticized Democrats for not being inclusive of the voters who have traditionally been loyal to them.

“The Democratic Party will not survive the 21st century with the votes of people of color without the real leadership of people of color, especially black women, at every level.”

The essay is reminiscent of Edwards’ senate campaign. One male elected official criticized her for invoking “identity politics.”

“Race does matter,” she said during one debate.“It’s time that we had the ability to speak for ourselves.”

Edwards’ recent legislative efforts have included a bill addressing police brutality, the protection of Historically Black Colleges, and the push to encourage women and minorities to pursue careers in science and math.

6 Ways Reading Will Enrich and Enhance Your Life

Readers are leaders.

Readers expand their worlds, their minds, their perspectives.

Readers develop a deeper flexibility to handle life’s challenges.

But these days, with all the flitting video distraction of the Internet, it’s sometimes harder to sit for long and sink into a great book.

Do you need help convincing yourself, however, that it’s worth it?

Here are six ways you can use reading to enhance your life, make you more attractive and at the same time make people more interested in you.

1. Reading Refines Your Intelligence

Follow your curiosity. Unlike school assignments, the books you choose are those that pique your interest.

Perhaps you’re interested in psychology, poetry, body language, or biographies of great historical figures.

Whatever it is that interests you, you get to choose. For this reason alone, you’re far more likely to turn pages and open up dusty corners of your own mind.

And as you vary what interests you you’ll start gaining a wide wealth of knowledge – knowledge you can start peppering into conversations with friends and colleagues. Everybody likes to learn – especially when you’ve done the heavy lifting for them.

2. You’ll Discover Practical Life Insights

Here’s a happy surprise of reading widely…

Reading across different topics tends to cross-pollinate and overlap.

You’ll start making fascinating and original connections among seemingly unrelated topics.

From reading psychology, you might understand your financial decisions as well as your relationship choices.

From reading about body language or social dynamics, you might figure out why you haven’t gotten ahead or the secrets of people you know who “mysteriously” succeed.

From a dog training manual, you may insights on parenting (I’ m not kidding). And from reading about social habits of primates, you might learn why your relationship with your family or partner is working or not working.

3. You’ll Expand Your Vocabulary

A good vocabulary is one of the most reliable markers of financial success in the world, according to academic studies.

Reading books by thoughtful authors allows you to discover new words and new meanings – IF – you take the time to look up those words.

Here’s a special tip: look up the roots of each word because that will give you extra insight. For example, did you now that the word “sarcasm” literally means “flesh-tearing”? Now you know why sarcastic people can be so hurtful.

4. You’ll Improve Your Writing Skill

Writing with care and precision is one of the other great indicators of success in business and life.

Bad communicators rarely get their message across – and rarely get what they want. But when you study the words, sentence structure, rhythms and cadences of powerful writers, you can adapt their power to your own communications.

The best writers all begin by copying or “modeling” the writing of others.

Tip: copy out the best writing you find by hand – it goes straight to your brain and becomes more natural for you to imitate in your own writing.

5. Fiction and Biography Develops Empathy

Feel like increasing your emotional intelligence? Find that you get caught up on your own head and can’t really feel the pain and joys of others?

Reading fiction and biography can help with that.

Stepping inside the minds of other and getting their perspectives is helpful in understanding why others make decisions, who they choose to love, what makes someone commit, or break up a relationship.

Having this increase in empathy can help you out in your relationships with friends, family, and even help you get your ex back by giving you the ability to finally get out of your own thoughts and see things from their point of view for a change.

6. You Will Get Inspired Anew

If you’ve ever felt like the world is crumbling all around you, then reading tales of triumph and adventure, and how others, fictional or real, overcame diversity can give you the energy and courage to rise to life’s challenges.

It’s why we love heroic tales! We see ourselves in these heroes. More than that, we FEEL ourselves in these heroes as we are carried along by the storyteller’s skill. This way, it’s not a mere mental exercise, but an actual “experience” in our own minds and imaginations.

Tip: rather than “compare” yourself to a hero in a book, look for that one quality that helped them succeed and find it in yourself. Then make a commitment to cultivating that quality in your own unique way.

Got it?

Great.

So turn of the computer, put your cell phone in another room and crack open a good book. And be sure to inhale the pages deeply. Books tend to have a wonderful smell as well.

Best Selling Author, Emmy-Nominated Producer, Screenwriter and Entrepreneur, Adam Gilad leads a community of over 80,000 men and women on their quest to create love and a bold, inspired life. Having served as a Stanford Humanities Center Graduate Research Fellow and host of National Lampoon Radio, Adam blends a bracing mix of research, humor and global wisdom traditions to help men and women break through the habits blocking their ability to open into love and freedom.

Where to Find Wisdom in the Body

Jill Suttie

Many cultures consider the human heart to be the seat of wisdom. Now scientists are finding some evidence for this, though the reality may be more complicated than it seems.

Previous research has suggested that higher heart rate variability (HRV)–the variability in the time between our heartbeats, which is a measure of heart health–is associated with better cognitive and emotional functioning. For example, higher HRV has been linked to better working memory and attention, higher levels of empathy and social functioning, and better emotional self-control. Could heart rate variability be linked to better moral judgments, as well?

Researcher Igor Grossmann from the University of Waterloo, Ontario, and his colleagues at the University of Western Sydney in Australia, looked at how HRV interacts with moral reasoning and judgment–or wisdom–in a series of experiments.

2016-05-10-1462905373-2152535-grove.jpg

To measure wisdom, 186 participants were asked to select a social or political issue currently being debated in Australia that they felt particularly strongly about–such as climate change, unemployment, taxes, etc. Then they were asked to discuss their insights into the issue and how they thought it might play out over time using one of two possible viewpoints: 1) a “self-immersed” or subjective, more personal perspective, using first-person pronouns like “I” or “me” when possible; or 2) a “self-distanced” or more objective, third-person perspective, using pronouns like “he” or “she” when possible.

The researchers wanted to see if directing people to take the perspective of others (versus thinking in a more egocentric way) might play a role in wise reasoning, and how that interacted with HRV. Past studies had found that wisdom might not arise simply from higher levels of cognitive functioning (which is linked to HRV); a self-distanced perspective might also be needed to facilitate insight.

Observers blind to the experiment coded the participants’ discussions, looking for evidence of wisdom–defined as a recognition of one’s limits of knowledge, the possibility of change, and others’ perspectives, and an attempt to integrate these different points of view.

Afterwards, the participants were asked to make judgments about a fictitious person who engaged in neutral or morally ambiguous activities, such as returning (or not) a found wallet, or keeping change (or not) when a roommate gave them money to buy pizza. Observers rated these judgments for bias based on whether participants considered both dispositional factors and situational factors in making their judgments, or if they relied only on one or the other. For example, participants would be considered biased if they said that keeping a wallet signified that the person was dishonest, period (relying on dispositional explanations alone), without considering the possibility that circumstance–e.g., the person was poor and needed the money–might have played a role.

Analyses showed that having high HRV was connected to wisdom, but only if individuals had been instructed to take a self-distanced perspective. Participants with high resting HRV (recorded before and after the experiments) who were assigned to the “self-distanced” perspective were significantly more likely to display wise reasoning and less biased judgments than those with high HRV assigned to the “self-immersed” perspective, while those with low HRV did not seem to reason or judge differently based on their assigned perspective.

This suggests to Grossmann that having high HRV is not enough to improve one’s moral reasoning or to prevent bias, even if it has been tied to better thinking and emotional regulation in past research.

“The efficient processing of information or a lot of prefrontal cortex activity alone does not necessarily make you wiser. You also need to step beyond your own immediate self-interest for that,” he says. “So not everyone that has higher heart rate variability will suddenly be a wise person.”

Grossmann believes that the current study builds on some of his prior research in which he found important differences between intelligence, cognitive activity, and wisdom. In previous studies, he’d found that intelligence didn’t seem to impact one’s well-being, whereas wise reasoning seems to be associated with various markers of individual well-being and happiness. This suggests that wisdom and intelligence are separate constructs.

“Wise reasoning is only weakly related to general cognitive abilities,” he says.

Though HRV may play a role in wisdom, Grossman thinks that there isn’t a lot one can do to change it–it’s more a matter of individual differences. But, he says, we may want to consider training people in impartial, third-person perspective taking to help them be wiser in life, whether they have high HRV or not. He and his team are involved in a number of projects aimed at helping others to be more objective–in social, political, and intergroup conflict situations–and eventually producing more long-lasting changes.

“I don’t know exactly what the nuances of this intervention would be, but I hope to tell you in a year,” he says.

We Did Nothing On Vacation, And I’m Not Sorry

This article first appeared on QuietRev.com

“What did you do during vacation?”

It’s a question intended to spark schoolyard chitchat—a basic social ritual among parents—but I fear I never have quite the right response. Why? Because my two young children and I tend not to do much of anything during a school break. Or over a long weekend. Or, well, at all. We are neither lazy nor uninspired; we live in New York City, arguably the most exciting place on Earth, where we have lots of friends and loved ones with whom we can share fun, meaningful experiences. My family is, in short, very fortunate. Happy. But we are not eager doers. We tend to stay put and just be.

Is that so scandalous to admit? I suspect there are plenty of parents out there who also value the comfort and quiet of their homes above all other places. Still, I’ve always been self-conscious—if not downright apologetic—about being a homebody. That’s the term I would have used to describe myself back when I was a latch-key kid growing up in the suburbs, spending most of my free time curled beneath a blanket with a book. Or writing in my diary. Or daydreaming, cat in lap. I didn’t really know what an introvert was or understand the exact reasons why I wanted to be left alone, but my desire to withdraw from the outside world seemed wrong somehow, and I struggled to invent excuses for my behavior. “Sorry,” my little brother was trained to say to anyone who called for me. “She can’t come to the phone right now.” “Sorry,” I might say if I was invited to a sleepover party. “I’m coming down with a cold.”

Of course, I couldn’t just tell my friends the truth: that the social demands of the school day left me depleted and I needed time and space to recover and rebuild my confidence. Would they think I was weird? Dump me from their inner circle? (They did both, eventually.) If only I understood that choosing a solo activity over a social one was nothing to feel ashamed about. “Spend free time the way you like,” Susan Cain writes inQuiet. “Not the way you think you’re supposed to.” Why did I waste so many years of my young life doing things I didn’t want to do? Why couldn’t I resist all that peer pressure and simply say no?

Even now, as a single working parent who prizes private time above everything else, I’m still learning how to decline an invitation with grace and reply yes when it counts. Birthday parties? Absolutely. Play dates? For sure. Double-booking birthday parties and play dates with drop-ins and/or fly-bys? Not so much.

For the most part, my well-worn efforts to reduce social overload have proved welcome in our family. My born-in-dance-shoes daughter, age 6, knows that all she has to do is give me a Little Rascals wave and I’ll take her home. My 4-year-old son, a tried-and-trueQuiet Child, barely makes it out the door before I start up with the promises of “we’ll be back soon.” (Needless to say, I know where he’s coming from.) Children, with all their restless energy and unmitigated impulses, need their downtime as much as their too-often overwhelmed parents do. That’s why, during this past school break, we skipped the travel arrangements and scheduled lots of opportunities for building sofa-pillow forts, having picnics on the living room rug, staging readings for an ever-growing collection of Beanie Boos, and even pulling down the shades on a sunny day to transform our apartment into a darkened movie theater. Because in my book, that’s what being on vacation is all about.

But sometimes that old guilt over being a homebody/introvert creeps back in, and I worry that I’ve compromised my kids’ worldview by not being more outgoing. As a mother who consistently chooses to bake cupcakes instead of going to a Broadway musical, a staycation over a trip to Club Med with family friends, I can’t help but wonder: Will there come a day when my own kids criticize me for my apparent lack of adventure? Or will they be judged by their peers the way I was by mine? I’ve imposed my adult lifestyle preferences on their young lives. Should I try harder to escape my comfort zone and give them a wider range of experiences?

I’m inclined to think that my family is just fine for now. After all, they will always have Paris—as I had, at an age when I could truly appreciate it. As time goes by and my son and daughter become more independent, I will encourage them to explore their interests and interpersonal relationships, no matter how far and wide they go. Until then, I plan to keep things simple by staying close to home. This grants me a chance to catch my breath as well as to have a glimpse of my kids’ inner workings. Because it is indeed breathtaking to witness their joy as they discover what they’re made of—and what they can make of themselves. My daughter, for example, will take over the kitchen table and draw elaborate, highly literate cartoons for hours. My son, sitting beneath her on the floor, can solve complex puzzles and construct LEGO landscapes well into the night.

Would they have found such creative ways to entertain and express themselves if they were busy attending social functions or fighting jet lag after a trip across the globe? Perhaps. But I choose to believe that by making their solo downtime a priority, I am helping them realize their greatest potential. In these quiet moments—of play, self-reflection, even vague boredom—they can hear their unique voices. Learn who they really are on the inside. And use their hearts and minds to do anything they want. They are free to just be. No apologies necessary—not to me, not to anyone.

Samantha Bee Breaks Down How The GOP ‘Legitimized’ The Abortion Issue

Abortion may be a key issue for evangelical Christian voters, but Samantha Bee says that wasn’t always the case.

On Monday night, the “Full Frontal” host went back in time to the late 1970s to explain how the issue was manufactured by power-hungry leaders of the religious right and then legitimized by the Republican Party.

Last week, we took a look at the religious right, those coveted evangelical voters that conservatives spent decades pandering to only to be dumped just before November prom for a heretical billionaire bully who only says the word ‘God’ when he is ejaculating on a pile of money,” said Bee.

“Many people think the new religious right arose as a response to the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision,” she added. “But that’s not true.”

Bee played a clip showing Dartmouth religion professor Randall Balmer revealing how leaders of the religious right held a conference call in 1979 to discuss which issues they should politicize. One member suggested abortion.

“Wait, were they founding a movement or deciding what toppings to get on their pizza?” asked Bee. “Now they just needed to tell the rest of us that abortion was bad.”

Bee then spoke to filmmaker Frank Schaeffer, the son of prominent Christian theologian Francis Schaeffer, who produced propaganda videos (such as the one below) to promote the pro-life movement.

It was to become “the single greatest regret of my life,” Schaeffer said.

“Most evangelical leaders didn’t want anything to do with [the issue of abortion]. They wanted to just preach Jesus,” said Schaeffer. “They thought politics was dirty. They didn’t want anything to do with it. We had to talk them into it.”

Schaeffer said the religious right’s anti-abortion agenda was legitimized with the help of Jack Kemp, who went onto become President George H. W. Bush’s housing secretary.

“(Kemp) brought in 50 senators and congressmen including Henry Hyde and Bob Dole and a bunch of other people and gave it respectability,” Schaeffer said. And the rest, as they say, is history.

Check it out in the clip above.

The Horrors of Andersonville: Life and Death Inside a Civil War Prison (Exceptional Social Studies Titles for Upper Grades)

The Confederate prison known as Andersonville existed for only the last fourteen months of the Civil War – but its well-documented legacy of horror has lived on in the diaries of its prisoners and the transcripts of the trial of its commandant. The diaries describe appalling conditions in which vermin-infested men were crowded into an open stockade with a single befouled stream as their water source. Food was scarce and medical supplies virtually nonexistent. The bodies of those who did not survive the night had to be cleared away each morning. Designed to house 10,000 Yankee prisoners, Andersonville held 32,000 during August 1864. Nearly a third of the 45,000 prisoners who passed through the camp perished. Exposure, starvation, and disease were the main causes, but excessively harsh penal practices and even violence among themselves contributed to the unprecedented death rate. At the end of the war, outraged Northerners demanded retribution for such travesties, and they received it in the form of the trial and subsequent hanging of Captain Henry Wirz, the prison’s commandant. The trial was the subject of legal controversy for decades afterward, as many people felt justice was ignored in order to appease the Northerners’ moral outrage over the horrors of Andersonville. The story of Andersonville is a complex one involving politics, intrigue, mismanagement, unfortunate timing, and, of course, people – both good and bad. Relying heavily on first-person reports and legal documen

Jennifer Lawrence Has Just 2 Words To Say To Donald Trump

Jennifer Lawrence has no love for Donald Trump. That much is clear.

And the actress has now revealed exactly what she wanted to say when she came close to meeting the presumptive Republican presidential nominee in person: “Hey Trump, fuck you!”

Lawrence disclosed what would have been her message to the billionaire real estate magnate on “The Graham Norton Show,” which aired in the U.K. on Friday night.

Fellow Hollywood star Johnny Depp was talking about playing Trump for comedy website Funny or Die when the show’s host, Norton, asked Lawrence if she’d ever met The Donald.

I was at a concert where I heard he was attending, so I had my full security team, like I was like ‘find Donald Trump,'” she said. “I was adamant on finding him and making a video of me going, ‘Hey Trump, fuck you!'”

Lawrence has, of course, spoken out against Trump before.

“If Donald Trump becomes president, that will be the end of the world,” she said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly in Oct. 2015.

Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liarrampant xenophoberacistmisogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims — 1.6 billion members of an entire religion — from entering the U.S.

6 Ways Nice People Can Master Conflict

2016-04-16-1460820691-7236967-6WaysNicePeopleCanMasterConflictHP.jpg

When you’re a nice person, conflict can be a real challenge. Not that mean people are any better at conflict; they just enjoy it more.

New research from Columbia University shows that how you handle conflict can make or break your career. The researchers measured something scientifically that many of us have seen firsthand–people who are too aggressive in conflict situations harm their performance by upsetting and alienating their peers, while people who are too passive at handling conflict hinder their ability to reach their goals.

The secret to effective handling of conflict is assertiveness–that delicate place where you get your needs met without bullying the other person into submission. Assertive people strike a careful balance between passivity and aggression (that is, they never lean too far in either direction).

2016-04-16-1460820770-9900702-6WaysNicePeopleCanMasterConflictHP2.jpg

How To Handle Conflict Assertively

It’s easy to think that nice people are too passive. While that’s often true, unchecked passivity can boil over into aggression. So there are plenty of very nice people out there who have exhibited both extremes of the assertiveness spectrum.

To be assertive, you need to learn to engage in healthy conflict. Healthy conflict directly and constructively addresses the issue at hand without ignoring or trivializing the needs of either party. The strategies that follow will get you there.

Consider the repercussions of silence. Sometimes it’s hard to muster the motivation to speak up when the likelihood is high that things will turn ugly. The fastest way to motivate yourself to act is to fully consider the costs of not speaking up–they’re typically far greater than not standing up for yourself. The trick is that you need to shift your attention away from the headache that will come with getting involved to all of the things you stand to gain from your assertiveness.

Say “and” instead of “but.”
The simple act of replacing the word “but” with “and” makes conflict much more constructive and collaborative. Say, for example, that your teammate John wants to use the majority of your budget on a marketing campaign, but you’re worried that doing so won’t leave enough money for a critical new hire. Instead of saying, “I see that you want to use the money for marketing, but I think we need to make a new hire,” say “I see that you want to use the money for marketing, and I think we need to make a new hire.” The difference is subtle, but the first sentence minimizes the value of his idea. The second sentence states the problem as you see it, without devaluing his idea, which then opens things up for discussion. Saying “and” makes the other party feel like you’re working with them, rather than against them.

Use hypotheticals. When you assert yourself, you don’t want it to look like you’re poking holes in their idea (even when you are). Hypotheticals are the perfect way to pull this off. Telling someone, for example, “Your new product idea won’t work because you overlooked how the sales team operates” comes across much more aggressively than suggesting the hypothetical, “How do you think our sales team will go about selling this new product?” When you see a flaw and present a hypothetical, you’re engaging with the original idea and giving the other party a chance to explain how it might work. This shows that you’re willing to hear the other person out.

Don’t speak in absolutes (“You Always” or “You Never.”) No one always or never does anything. People don’t see themselves as one-dimensional, so you shouldn’t attempt to define them as such. Using these phrases during conflict makes people defensive and closed off to your message. Instead, point out what the other person did that’s a problem for you. Stick to the facts. If the frequency of the behavior is an issue, you can always say, “It seems like you do this often.” or “You do this often enough for me to notice.”

Ask good questions until you get to the heart of the matter.
Failing to understand the motive behind someone’s behavior throws fuel on the fire of conflict, because it makes everything they do appear foolish and shortsighted. Instead of pointing out flaws, you should seek to understand where the other person is coming from. Try asking good questions, such as Why did you choose to do it that way? What do you mean by that? and Can you help me to understand this better? Even when you don’t see eye to eye, using questions to get to the underlying motive builds trust and understanding, both of which are conflict killers.

When you challenge, offer solutions. People don’t like it when they feel as if you’re attempting to take apart their idea right off the bat. When you challenge someone’s idea, but also offer a solution, you demonstrate that you want to work together to come up with a fix. This reinforces the value of their idea, even if it’s full of holes. For example, you might say “One potential problem that I see with your idea is ___. However, I think we can overcome this problem if we can just figure out a way to___.” In this example, you aren’t even providing the solution. You’re just acknowledging that you’re willing to work together to find one.

Bringing It All Together

Mastering conflict requires emotional intelligence. Emotionally intelligent people know how to craft their message in a conflict, whether they’re naturally assertive or not. They take other people’s feelings into account while still asserting themselves confidently.

How have you used assertiveness to your advantage? Please share your thoughts in the comments section below, as I learn just as much from you as you do from me.

Need To Make A Healthy Change? Start With Self-Care Sprints

Day after day, you’re deluged with all manner of media pushing you to do this or that to achieve your holy grail of optimal health and well-being. Guzzle the green shake, hit the hot yoga, hold a five-minute plank or unplug for an hour. Despite repeated efforts to do what the guru de jour is advocating, you keep falling down on your behind, feeling defeated by what’s beginning to look like mission impossible.

Instead of an overhaul, why not start small, so that you’re not overwhelmed? I like to think of it as a daily self-care sprint. Rather than investing tons of time upfront, try out new healthy habits for five minutes at a time to see if they stick. That way, whether you’re time-starved, sleep-deprived or otherwise overburdened, you can get past excuses or fears and finally take that first step toward establishing a healthy lifestyle. Do what you want – and what you need.

Commit to performing just one daily sprint in each of three areas – improve your mind, eat well and strengthen your body – and work on each new habit until it sticks. Heck, that’s just 15 minutes a day at the very least. You can do this!

To help get you started, I’ve created just a few guidelines:

  1. All devices and screens should be turned off unless required for the sprint.

  2. Do as many sprints as you wish throughout the day.

  3. Stepping it up: If you’re just beginning, limit any new habits to five-minute sprints. Once you get in the groove, you can expand any five-minute sprints that “stick” to 10 or 15 minutes and add more sprints. Finally, as you advance, you can continue to increase the amount of time you spend on a self-care sprint and the number of sprints you do.

To get started, here are some ideas of self-care sprints you might try. Of course, feel free to create your own lists that focus on areas you’d like to improve or address.

Improve Your Mind

  • Meditate or pray.

  • Write in a journal.

  • Take five deep, cleansing breaths.

  • Sit silently and be mindfully observant of everything around you.

  • Write a list of five things for which you’re grateful.

  • Write a list of five things that bring you joy.

  • Integrate at least one thing that brings you joy into each day.

  • Laugh out loud.

  • Play with a pet.

  • Read a book.

  • Listen to music.

  • Watch the sunrise or sunset.

  • Send texts, emails or handwrite a brief note of friendship, love or gratitude to a friend or loved one.

  • De-clutter a messy home or work area.

  • Write down five terrific things about your body, appearance or performance.

  • Make plans to go out with friends or family.

  • Soak in a tub.

  • To wind down before you go to sleep, spend five minutes laying in muted light reflecting on one positive highlight of your day.

Eat Well

  • Remove processed or refined foods from your kitchen.

  • De-clutter your kitchen and eating area.

  • Chop vegetables.

  • Make a smoothie.

  • Learn how to read a nutrition label.

  • Pack your lunch or snacks.

  • Create a lovely ambiance for eating – a place setting, music, table flowers, or whatever else you wish to include; it’s worth reiterating, the TV and all other devices and screens should be turned off.

  • Write your grocery list.

  • Identify three to five foods you might binge on and substitute in a tasty, healthy substitute for each.

  • Sign up for a food-tracking app or program.

  • Learn a new recipe.

  • Pull out the best china for tea or coffee, and savor.

  • Schedule a family or friends shared meal date.

  • Log your foods in a journal or on a tracker.

Strengthen Your Body

  • Get up and move your body for five minutes after 45 minutes of sitting.

  • Take a five-minute walk.

  • Walk stairs.

  • Walk hills.

  • Crank up the music and dance.

  • Jump rope.

  • Choose a wearable tracking device.

  • Do a combination of one or more exercises, such as bent-knee or total body push-ups, wall squats, standing on one leg until you can’t any longer, planks or bridges.

  • Strength train using one or more body parts, such as your back and biceps.

  • Do ab exercises.

  • Do yoga poses.

  • Do pilates.

  • Run in place, on a treadmill or outdoors.

  • Use any cardio equipment, such as an elliptical, a treadmill, a cycle or a rower.

  • Choose new exercise music.

  • Register for a charity walk, run or bike event.

  • De-clutter your workout clothes closet area.

  • Launder and organize your workout clothes.

  • Pack your gym bag.

  • Stretch.

Happy sprinting!

Yosemite’s Historic Hotels and Camps (Postcard History)

Yosemite’s Historic Hotels and Camps (Postcard History)

Yosemite National Park is a place of extraordinary natural beauty with renowned waterfalls, spectacular granite rock formations, and serene meadows. Although indigenous peoples already inhabited Yosemite, settlers of European descent found their way there beginning in 1851. To serve the steady growth of tourists and visitors, lodging and accommodations have always been central to the park’s history. The popularity of postcards starting in the early 1900s and lasting several decades coincided with the growth of the park’s hotels and camps, transportation, and entertainment. This book of vintage postcards illustrates and chronicles those places and events. It provides visitors with an understanding and appreciation for the unique and diverse places made available to tourists throughout Yosemite’s history.

Michael Moore Calls Flint Crisis A ‘Hate Crime’ Based On GOP’s ‘Race Hatred’

Michael Moore has called the Flint water crisis a “hate crime.”

Speaking on “Real Time with Bill Maher” on Friday night, the Oscar-winning documentary filmmaker ripped the way Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder (R) and his administration dealt with the lead poisoning of his home city’s water supply.

“This is not a lead issue, this is not even an infrastructure issue,” he told Maher, adding that it boiled down to Snyder’s decision to “give the rich in Michigan a $ 1 billion tax break” — which left the state with a budget deficit, and prompted it to switch the city’s source of tap water from the Great Lakes to the Flint River.

“Within a few months they realized they were poisoning people and the word came down ‘don’t say anything,'” said Moore. “And they let people continue to drink the water and did nothing about it, and I think that’s a crime.”

“They did it because it’s a black city, it’s a poor city,” he added. “They wouldn’t do this to Bloomfield Hills or Ann Arbor or Grosse Pointe. This was a hate crime. It was a hate crime based on this race hatred of this particular party.”

The Democrats were also to blame, added Moore, who said he was “very upset” after President Barack Obama was pictured earlier this month drinking a glass of filtered Flint water to prove how safe it now was.

“It was just a stunning sad thing to see happen,” said Moore. “Nobody’s gonna worry about it. […] It’s really shameful that he did that.”

WATCH: Tapfirmations (Tapping into Affirmations)

Affirmations have been a part of self-development for a very long time, but contrary beliefs can limit their effectiveness. Tapping is a powerful way to make affirmations a much more useful tool in becoming the person you wish to be, and creating the life you wish to live.

If you are new to tapping, it will be beneficial to also watch the first episode in the “Tap Out Your Fears” series — which explains the basics of EFT — click here.

As with any of my tapping videos, this is an abbreviated process for releasing uncomfortable feelings and enhancing good ones. Some folks may find their fear dissolve after just one tapping session, but for others, it will take some repetition, bringing the discomfort down little by little each time. (Still others may uncover specific issues that are best addressed directly with a wellness practitioner.) In any event, this brief video should help at least take the edge off the discomfort, freeing you up to enjoy life much more. Let us know how it helped you!

For a picture of the tapping points — and more info on EFT — click here.

Tapping can sometimes bring up long-buried emotions, which is why I state that, before tapping along, folks must take full responsibility for their own well-being. For more information about that, please read this disclaimer.

Until next time, feel free to tap along with any of the many videos I have on YouTube or the many recordings I have at www.TapWithBrad.com.

For EFT with kids, please visit: www.TheWizardsWish.com.

Hawaii May Become The First State To Help Farms Go Organic

Hawaii has become the first U.S. state to approve tax credits for organic farmers, a huge potential boost for the industry.

A bill now awaiting Gov. David Ige’s signature would provide farmers up to $ 50,000 in tax credits to help offset the costs of getting certified as organic by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

The measure, if it becomes law, may encourage similar programs in other states and help feed America’s growing appetite for organic foods.

“Organic agriculture has a huge role to play in addressing some of the most pressing issues of our time — economic revitalization, climate change, public health and environmental protection,” Ashley Lukens, director of Hawaii Center for Food Safety, said in a statement praising passage of the legislation.

Such initiatives, Lukens said, show the state is stepping up “to fulfill its responsibility to support local food and recognize organic farming.”

Organic certification often is a significant financial challenge for farmers — costing hundreds to thousands of dollars, according to the USDA.

The USDA’s Organic Certification Cost Share program currently helps farmers with up to 75 percent of their certification costs, but it has a maximum of $ 750. If signed into law, Hawaii’s tax breaks would reimburse farmers for the remaining costs, and would help small farms cover additional expenses like application fees, inspection costs and equipment to grow organic products.

The U.S. has seen a 300 percent increase in certified organic farms since 2002. But the surge isn’t enough to satisfy the growing demand from consumers. Some businesses, like Costco, have resorted to financing organic farmers directly to meet demand.

Hawaii’s legislation would “make a huge difference, particularly for a new generation of farmers who want to farm differently in a more sustainable way, but lack the resources to get started,” state Rep. Chris Lee, who introduced the bill, told The Huffington Post.

A whopping 88 percent of Hawaii’s food is imported.

“If we want to help grow local agriculture and truly change our precarious reliance [on imported food],” Lee said, “then we need to take big steps.”

Return to Travers Corners

Return to Travers Corners

With stories full of the "witty homespun characters" (Library Journal) of his first collection, "Return to Travers Corners" brings us farther along in the lives of the townspeople. Travers Corners is not much more than Main Street. There’s Ed’s Garage and Filling Station; McCracken’s General Store — still owned and run by Junior, the worst fisherman who ever lived to fish; the Tin Cup Bar and Care; Delores’s Beauty Parlor; and The Carrie Creek Boat Works and Guide Service — Judson C. Clark proprietor. Travers Corners is an outpost for all things wild and beautiful — rivers and creeks, wildlife, cattle ranches, glaciated bench-lands sweeping into the timbered mountains. Travers is a fly-fishing paradise. Here are stories of love interests and fishing dories, of famous fishermen full of hot air and simple ones filled with awe. From the explosive businessman who gets his due to the humble genius whose fondest desire comes true, we’re privileged to fish with, and wish with, the people of Trarers Corners. The simplicity of the rural West beckons from every tale — written with a wit that puts it all in perspective. The world would be a better place if we had all spent a spell in Travers Corners.

Air pollution and impacts on women’s and children’s health and climate change

Cooking and eating – caring for our families at home, moving onto work, school and markets, and then back home again. These are universal rituals that fill our days and the lives of people the world over. And yet there is an unrecognized health threat lurking in the shadows of our most basic routines: air pollution.

It may appear as a faint haze on the urban horizon. Or it may be visible, as black and billowing smoke pouring out of the kitchen of a poor rural home. According to the latest World Health Organization data, air pollution causes over one third of deaths and disability from strokes, lung cancer, and chronic respiratory disease – and over a quarter of heart disease. All in all, it is responsible for one in every 8 deaths worldwide. About 7 million people every year.

Following the signing of the Paris Agreement, which makes a historic commitment to limit global temperature rise to “well below” 2⁰ C, we need to consider how to expedite climate actions. One of the fastest and most cost-effective ways for targeting the gradual and often imperceptible changes wrought by climate may be by tackling the visible: smog and haze over our kitchens and landscapes.

Scientists know that many air pollutants are also climate change drivers. Take indoor air pollution, largely caused by the burning of coal, kerosene, wood, and dung in smoky and inefficient cookstoves, by 3 billion poor households worldwide.

Around four million people die annually from such pollution, mostly women and children who spend the most time around the family cookstove – inhaling soot-filled smoke in a brew of other toxic and carcinogenic compounds.

When household pollution drifts outside, it releases large quantities of black carbon, a short-lived climate pollutant – making home cookstoves the second largest contributor to black carbon emissions globally, behind forest grassland and agricultural fires. Black carbon warms the atmosphere, inhibits crop growth, changes local rainfall patterns, and accelerates snow and glacier melt – threatening the reliability of water supplies, crops and livelihoods.

Clean fuels such as biogas, ethanol, solar, LPG and cleaner-burning biomass cookstoves, provide a cost-effective way to reduce black carbon, CO2 emissions, while radically improving the health of the poor. In Nigeria, early results from a major new study show significant benefits to newborn health when pregnant women switch from biomass and kerosene, still used by 75% of the population, to cleaner-burning ethanol.

For outdoor air pollution, meanwhile, similar air pollution, climate and health synergies also exist. Cleaner power production, more efficient building energy systems, renewable energy, and better waste management can reduce long-lived CO2 emissions, short-lived climate pollutants such as black carbon and methane, and the fine particulates that cause smog.

Currently, 98% of large cities (with populations over 100,000) in low and middle income countries have unhealthy air quality, according to new WHO data, as do 44% of high income cities – including major European cities. Widespread reliance upon diesel vehicles – which emit black carbon along with carcinogens in their soot and smoke – is a crosscutting issue.

Prioritizing clean rapid transit, and walking and cycling networks, reduces air pollution and emissions of climate pollutants. These also have “multiplier” effects on health – reducing high rates of pedestrian traffic injury in developing countries – and stimulating physical activity in higher income cities – to combat the epidemic of obesity and related diseases.

Examples of bold action already exist. Oslo will ban cars from its city centre by 2019. Curitiba, Brazil is pioneering efforts to develop extensive bus, walking and cycling networks, green spaces and recycling as well as waste management systems.

What is needed now is a global coalition of health, environment and climate actors, to expand awareness and drive change at the grassroots, where it will count.

The Climate and Clean Air Coalition to reduce Short-Lived Climate Pollutants (CCAC) is one such partnership involving over 50 countries and 61 UN agencies and NGOs. The CCAC is focusing on reducing black carbon and methane from urban transport and municipal waste, among other sources. The Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves is helping to introduce cleaner cooking solutions in developing countries. Cities are now coming together to create collective action that protects and promotes health, reduces pollution and mitigates climate change.

WHO is accelerating its global monitoring of air pollution exposures; updating guidelines; consolidating evidence of health and climate synergies; and expanding advocacy about the health impacts of this modern-day scourge. The UN Secretary-General’s Every Woman Every Child movement has made combating indoor air pollution a key part of its updated Global Strategy for Women’s, Children’s and Adolescents’ Health for the next 15 years.

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development aims to “substantially reduce” air pollution-related deaths by 2030, for access to clean energy in the home and for clean air in cities. We call upon the global community to set clear mechanisms for delivering that, aiming to drastically cut deaths from air pollution by one-half or more.

By cutting air pollutants from sources that also emit climate pollutants, we can reduce greenhouse gas emissions and turn the tide on the epidemic of non-communicable diseases. We can translate the Paris Agreement into one of the strongest public health agreements of our time.

The solutions exist. We need to spread the word about their health and environment benefits, and catalyse political action. Fast action to tackle air pollution can’t come soon enough – for the health of our children and the planet.

Food Safety: The Science of Keeping Food Safe

  • Used Book in Good Condition
Food safety is a modern concept. Remarkably, it is only in the last 200 years that such concepts as foodborne germs, and the means of combating them (such as antiseptics and refrigeration), have been popularised. Yet in the 21st Century, consumers in the developed world do not accept that the food which they purchase and consume might carry a risk of making them ill – that our food should be safe is something we all take for granted. Food safety is a multi-faceted subject, using microbiology,

________

We live our very different lives
We try our very best
Sometimes it feels like fun and play
Sometimes a painful test …

Perceptions always seem to rule
Decide which way we go
Some days we fight right to the death
Some days we feel the flow …

Our vision is but what we see
Though never quite complete
We zoom upon the obvious
To keep our lives thus neat …

But if we were to look beyond
To feel what’s not in view
We might begin to understand
The worlds of Me and You ..
