This Too Shall Pass

Last year at this time, I was in the thick of it. I was six weeks in with a gassy baby who didn’t sleep. My husband and I were at each other’s throats. My family was on the other side of the country. My hormones were raging. My house was a mess.

When a mom friend innocently asked how it was going, it all word vomited out of my mouth.

“This too shall pass,” she said -– a little sadly. I didn’t really get it until now.

Maybe because when you are in the thick of it, you can’t see past your nose. You think your baby will always be a baby. He will never grow up and he will always be crying and you will never sleep, ever. In the new mother haze, all the crazy that’s in your head comes out to play. You believe your baby will never grow out of the dream feed, he’ll forever need to be swaddled and he’ll always fall asleep in the car.

This, of course, is not true.

But, no matter how many times completely sane people say that you won’t have a college freshman that needs to be rocked to sleep at 3 am, you don’t believe them.

I tried to remember “this too shall pass” whenever I got fried. During those 3 a.m. rocking sessions, it was something I could say to comfort myself. I rocked and rocked and wished so hard that I had could hit the fast forward button.

I wanted to fast forward till he was sleeping through the night. I wanted to fast forward till he stopped crying. I wanted to fast forward to not sterilizing everything. I wanted to fast forward past breastfeeding. I wanted to fast forward past early solids -– steamed sweet potatoes again? I wanted to fast forward through so many things. Milestones, really.

And guess what? It worked. My plea was answered. Somehow, I had found a magical baby fast-forward button. Time bent, the minutes sped up, and the baby grew and grew.

Fast forward to a year later. My friends are all having babies. They are so very tired. They are breastfeeding. They are up all night. I want to tell them that it won’t always be like this.

“This too shall pass,” I say. But I don’t just mean the night waking, tired arms, and the watery poop.

I mean everything. The newborn smell. The baby falling asleep on you. The quiet night bonding. The first smiles. The first foods. The first crawls. The first steps. Everything will pass so very fast.

A year later, I wish I never found that stupid fast forward button.

This morning, we walked to the corner -– picked up croissants and headed to the park. A mom was walking by with a new baby.

“He only sleeps in the stroller!” She said from across the street.

“Oh man, I remember that!” I said.

“It gets better, right?” she said.

I nodded. It gets so much better, but it’s never the same.

Right now, my toddler walks like a drunken man –- off balance and gesticulating dramatically. Curls fall in his blue eyes as his chunky legs stamp down in the ground. He babbles on and on as he walks. He sounds like an ewok. He is hilarious.

My husband is showing him a flower and he is touching it gently with his pointer finger. “Dat!” he says. “Dat! Dat! Dat!”

And I think, right now, this moment, this right here, I don’t want this too to pass.

I close my eyes and think, “Hello out there, if you’re listening –- I’d like to press the pause button. Does anybody know how to press pause?”

You Can Totally Do This Olympic Gymnast’s Workout On Your Lunch Break

Despite being the most decorated gymnast in U.S. history, Shannon Miller’s favorite workout these days is decidedly low-impact.

The 39-year-old mother of two is a self-described walker.

People are always surprised that I don’t do four-hour sweat sessions, or even two-hour sweat sessions,” Miller said. “I don’t have that kind of time and I don’t know many people who do. For me, it’s fitting it in. Like right now, I’m on the phone and I’m pacing around the house getting my steps in.”

It’s a solid strategy. Walking can have huge health benefits, including decreasing obesity risk, lowering blood sugar levels and improving sleep. And it’s government-sanctioned, too: In September, Surgeon General Vivek Murthy recommended walking as a gold-standard form of exercise. Murthy a getting at advised walkers get at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise, or five 30-minute exercise sessions, weekly.

Miller, a woman and children’s health advocate who runs her own lifestyle brand and travels around the country for motivational speeches, is a proponent of working manageable 10-minute exercise blocks into her day — some which she films and uploads to her YouTube channel.

“If you are at home, all is not lost. You can get a great workout just with the things in your house and body,” explained Miller, who creates family-fitness challenges for her kids during TV commercial breaks and attributes her toned arms to lifting her 2-year-old daughter. “It’s about really focusing on those baby steps.”

Miller chatted with HuffPost Lifestyle about her diet, her 2011 ovarian cancer diagnosis and how she stays calm and motivated under pressure:

Q: Between giving talks and being a parent, it seems like you’re constantly on the go. What’s your go-to snack when you don’t have time to cook?

A: I’m not a chef by any stretch of the imagination. I tend to say I eat like a 5-year-old. I’ll have an apple with cheese and almonds or fruit and string cheese. I always have nuts on hand, because it’s good protein and sticks with you. If I’m in a crunch, I’ll just have what I call a peanut-butter lollipop, which is just a big old scoop of peanut butter on a spoon. I’ll pair that with fruit or vegetables.

I almost always have a bag of carrot sticks to munch on when I travel. My husband laughs at me because I’m literally that person who always has food in her purse.

Q: Whether it’s competing in the Olympic games or speaking to a packed auditorium, how do you stay calm and motivate yourself to perform?

A: If you’ve done the work, then there’s nothing to worry about. My parents helped me understand that from an early age, and that always made me feel better when I got up to salute the judge before a balance beam routine. I knew that no matter how the routine went, there was nothing more I could have done to better prepare for that moment.

Take a deep breath and say a prayer (which is what I always did), or think about one positive thing in that extra beat breath you take before you go up.

I always pictured butterflies in my stomach. I would picture those butterflies in my stomach and as I breathed in, the butterflies went up to my chest. And then as I breathed out, the butterflies would fly out my fingertips. It’s okay, the butterflies are gone. Let’s go.

Q: How does that translate to your post-Olympics life? How do you handle unexpected situations that you can’t prepare for?

A: I’m a workhorse. I like to be prepared. But at the same time, life is preparation in a lot of ways. You’re always preparing for those things that you can’t prepare for. For me, it’s understanding what I can control, what I can’t control. I prepare the best I can for those things I know about.

That’s how it was in gymnastics as well. You can’t prepare for every situation that happens at a competition, whether they changed the lineup on you, or the gym floods and it’s different than you thought it was going to be. You just have to rely on the training that you had.

I always pictured butterflies in my stomach. I would picture those butterflies in my stomach and as I breathed in, the butterflies went up to my chest. And then as I breathed out, the butterflies would fly out my fingertips. It’s okay, the butterflies are gone. Let’s go.
7-time Olympic medalist Shannon Miller on staying calm under pressure

Something I thought about during my cancer journey, but learned as an athlete, is to get back up. You are going to make mistakes. You are going to have falls. I think as I’ve gotten older, I’ve gotten better at understanding that it’s not about being perfect. It’s about moving through the journey and really learning from your mistakes to be the best you can be each day.

Q: Did being diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2011 change the way you thought about your health?

A: You realize you aren’t invincible and things can happen no matter how hard you try. For me, it was doubling down on the importance of making my health a priority and not brushing it off, like a lot of women do. We get busy. We have crazy lives and we focus on everything but us.

Now I don’t take it for granted. I have an issue, I get it checked out, or at least I pay attention to it in a different way than I did before. In your 20s, you’re invincible and nothing can ever happen to you. When something happens to you like cancer, you really start to pay attention.

I hit a rut several years back of getting too crazy with my time. You have two kids and time is even less. One of my non-negotiables is that when I get up in the morning, I take five, usually 10 minutes, to focus on my day.

I use a few of those minutes to be appreciative and grateful for all of the opportunities I do have. I say my prayers, and then I take few minutes to think about my day and look at my schedule. Then I take a few minutes to focus on bigger-picture goals and what I ultimately want to achieve with that day.

It helps set the stage and put me in the right mode.

Trump Supporters Reveal Exactly What He’d Have To Do To Lose Their Votes

Jimmy Kimmel asked Trump supporters what The Donald would have to do to lose their votes. And as it turns out, it’s quite a bit.

For some of his followers, not even murder, smoking crack or punching the Pope would be enough to make them step off the Trump Train.

“It doesn’t matter if Donald Trump embellished his relationship with Ronald Reagan, his supporters don’t care,” said the host of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!

Claiming Trump voters were “passionate to the point” that the presumptive GOP presidential nominee could say or do absolutely anything and they’d still stick with him, Kimmel decided to test his hypothesis out.

He sent a reporter out onto the street to ask Trump supporters what it would take for the real estate magnate to lose their vote.

Warning; some of their answers may alarm you.

Check out their responses in the clip above.

Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liarrampant xenophoberacistmisogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims — 1.6 billion members of an entire religion — from entering the U.S.

8 Ways Smart People Use Failure to Their Advantage

2016-06-10-1465584721-7878179-8WaysSmartPeopleUseFailuretoTheirAdvantageHP

One of the biggest roadblocks to success is the fear of failure. Fear of failure is worse than failure itself because it condemns you to a life of unrealized potential.

“Success is stumbling from failure to failure with no loss of enthusiasm.” -Winston Churchill

This sounds rather easy and intuitive, but it’s very hard to do when the consequences of failure are severe.

The people who make history–true innovators–take things a step further and see failure as a mere stepping stone to success. Thomas Edison is a great example. It took him 1,000 tries to develop a light bulb that actually worked. When someone asked him how it felt to fail 1,000 times, he said, “I didn’t fail 1,000 times. The light bulb was an invention with 1,000 steps.”

That attitude is what separates the successes from the failures. Thomas Edison isn’t the only one. J. K. Rowling’s manuscript for Harry Potter was only accepted after twelve publishers denied it, and even then she was only paid a nominal advance. Oprah Winfrey lost her job as a Baltimore news anchor for becoming too emotionally involved in her stories, a quality that became her trademark. Henry Ford lost his financial backers twice before he was able to produce a workable prototype of an automobile. The list goes on and on.

“If you think you can do a thing or think you can’t do a thing, you’re right.” -Henry Ford

So, what separates the people who let their failures derail them from those who use failure to their advantage? Some of it comes down to what you do, and the rest comes down to what you think.

The actions you take in the face of failure are critical to your ability to recover from it, and they have huge implications for how others view you and your mistakes. There are five actions you must take when you fail that will enable you to succeed in the future and allow others to see you positively in spite of your failure.

1. Break the bad news yourself. If you’ve made a mistake, don’t cross your fingers and hope that no one will notice, because someone is going to–it’s inevitable. When someone else points out your failure, that one failure turns into two. If you stay quiet, people are going to wonder why you didn’t say something, and they’re likely to attribute this to either cowardice or ignorance.

2. Offer an explanation, but don’t make excuses. Owning your mistakes can actually enhance your image. It shows confidence, accountability, and integrity. Just be sure to stick to the facts. “We lost the account because I missed the deadline” is a reason. “We lost the account because my dog was sick all weekend and that made me miss the deadline” is an excuse.

3. Have a plan for fixing things.
Owning up to a mistake is one thing, but you can’t end it there. What you do next is critical. Instead of standing there, waiting for someone else to clean up your mess, offer your own solutions. It’s even better if you can tell your boss (or whomever) the specific steps that you’ve already taken to get things back on track.

4. Have a plan for prevention. In addition to having a plan for fixing things, you should also have a plan for how you’ll avoid making the same mistake in the future. That’s the best way to reassure people that good things will come out of your failure.

5. Get back on the horse. It’s important that you don’t let failure make you timid. That’s a mindset that sucks you in and handicaps you every time you slip up. Take enough time to absorb the lessons of your failure, and as soon as you’ve done that, get right back out there and try again. Waiting only prolongs bad feelings and increases the chance that you’ll lose your nerve.

Your attitude when facing failure is just as important as the actions you take. Using failure to your advantage requires resilience and mental strength, both hallmarks of emotional intelligence. When you fail, there are three attitudes you want to maintain.

6. Perspective is the most important factor in handling failure. People who are skilled at rebounding after failure are more likely to blame the failure on something that they did–the wrong course of action or a specific oversight–rather than something that they are. People who are bad at handling failure tend to blame failure on their laziness, lack of intelligence, or some other personal quality, which implies that they had no control over the situation. That makes them more likely to avoid future risk-taking.

7. Optimism is another characteristic of people who bounce back from failure. That sense of optimism is what keeps people from feeling like failure is a permanent condition. Instead, they tend to see each failure as a building block to their ultimate success because of the learning it provides.

8. Persistence. Optimism is a feeling of positivity; persistence is what you do with it. It’s optimism in action. When everybody else says, “Enough is enough” and decides to quit and go home, persistent people shake off those failures and keep going. Persistent people are special because their optimism never dies. This makes them great at rising from failure.

Bringing It All Together

Failure is a product of your perspective. What one person considers a crushing defeat, another sees as a minor setback. The beauty is that you can change how you see failure so that you can use it to better yourself.

How do you handle failure? Please share your thoughts in the comments section below as I learn just as much from you as you do from me.

5 Yoga Poses To Do Tonight That Will Help You Ace Tomorrow

After a busy and stressful day, what should be one of life’s simplest actions can often feel like the most difficult: falling asleep. If your thoughts are racing and your body is tense, getting high-quality, restorative sleep may seem impossible.

Enter the more than 5,000-year-old practice of yoga, which relaxes the body and soothes the mind. To help set you up for a great night’s sleep, we partnered with Sleep Number and asked popular yoga instructors across the country about the gentle poses they would recommend incorporating into our bedtime routines. Their answers, along with illustrated visual aids, are below. Take a look, talk to your doctor if necessary and sweet dreams.

1. Marjaryasana-Bitilasana (Cat-Cow Stretch)

This combination of poses stretches the spine, hips, neck and abdomen, and can help relieve lower back pain. Yoga-teacher trainer Rachel Scott said Marjaryasana-Bitilasana is perfect for “restoring mobility through the hips, spine and shoulders at the end of a long day.”

2. Bālāsana (Child’s Pose)

This zero-impact, resting pose allows you to focus on breath and reflect, said Ashley Josephine Zuberi, a private yoga instructor. “If this is the only quiet time you get all day, savor it,” Zuberi said. “Just 10 deep breaths in Child’s Pose can begin to shift your mind into a calming state, prepping you for a restful night’s sleep.”

3. Supta Matsyendrasana (Reclined Spinal Twist)

The Reclined Spinal Twist is a “perfect choice for bedtime because it’s a great way to unwind,” said yoga teacher and blogger Erica Rodefer Winters of Spoiled Yogi. “Gentle twists stretch the spine and can help melt tension in the shoulders, chest and upper back.”

4. Viparita Karani (Legs-Up-The-Wall Pose)

Yoga instructor and artist Mary Catherine Starr likes to practice Viparita Karani before bed, which helps improve blood circulation and relieve stress, she said. Starr, who blogs at Starr Struck, added that the pose is a “great way to get grounded and release tension.”

5. Savasana (Corpse Pose)

Lying flat on your back in Savasana helps stimulate a relaxation response, explained yoga instructor Amy Dannheim, who has a blog and popular Instagram feed. “Your brain gets a chance to relax,” Dannheim said, “and all of the pieces of the day get put back together so you can fall asleep with less stress and more peace of mind.”

Just like diet and exercise, sleep is unique to each person and important for optimal health. Sleep Number® beds adjust on each side to your ideal level of firmness, comfort and support — your Sleep Number® setting — for your best possible sleep.

Bill Maher Says ‘Pride And Prejudice’ Won Out In UK’s Brexit Vote

Bill Maher turned to Jane Austen to explain the United Kingdom’s decision to leave the European Union.

On Friday, the “Real Time with Bill Maher” host referenced two of the 18th century British writer’s novels while breaking down the surprise vote for Brexit.

“48 percent voted for ‘Sense and Sensibility,'” he said. “And 52 percent voted for ‘Pride and Prejudice.'”

The comedian said the issue of whether the U.K. should stay inside the European Union had been “hijacked by a bunch of anti-immigration isolationists who are obsessed with the idea that foreigners were stealing their jobs.”

“Thank God something like that never happened here,” he sarcastically added, in a clear nod towards Donald Trump.

Maher further mocked the presumptive GOP presidential candidate for being in favor of Brexit.

“Economists all over the world are saying this is a catastrophically stupid move, as evidence they offered lots of data, lots of charts, and the fact that Trump is for it,” he said.

Watch the full clip above.

Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liarrampant xenophoberacistmisogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims — 1.6 billion members of an entire religion — from entering the U.S.

3 Life-Changing Reasons To Kick The Gossip Habit

Several years ago I made a vow to give up gossiping and doing so has made me realize how dangerous it is, truly dangerous.

It’s so easy to get caught in an enticing yet unkind conversation about someone else. But if you’ve ever been the target of gossip, as I have been, you know how painful it is. No matter how we excuse it, talking behind another’s back is a harmful habit. My definition of gossip is simple:

Anything you wouldn’t say to
the person you’re talking about

The joke is that a secret is something you tell only one person at a time, but the result is a rumor that spreads like wildfire and alters how another person is perceived. Haven’t we all heard tittle-tattle and thought, Who knew? I had no idea! Beatle George Harrison said it memorably ~

Gossip is the Devil’s radio.

I know you don’t want to be known as a gossip, but it can be so tempting. So here are three reasons to motivate us to kick the habit and make a more positive impact on those around us.

  1. Gossip kills organizations. Whether it’s a global business, a school, a church, or a small partnership, talking behind others’ backs is death to the office. Fueling a negative perception about the boss, a direct report, or even a client saps positive energy from all concerned and diminishes the success of the organization.

In his Forbes magazine article Mike Myatt names it the fastest way to kill corporate culture: “The emotional distress and political discord associated with gossip undermines workplace performance, and can be nothing short of disastrous.”

  2. Gossip kills families. Being part of a strong and loving family is our greatest blessing, one that creates a safe and secure place for everyone fortunate enough to be part of it. Yet when an estrangement occurs, members take sides, and attention is pulled away from taking care of one another and doing our best to contribute to this gift.

My family is a large and loving one, but it too has fallen into this trap. Someone makes a mistake, the finger pointing begins, and the altered perception of this person grows until it’s no longer just gossip but a reason to pull back from the greater family. Fortunately our grandparents and parents were extraordinary models for us, so time goes by, wounds are healed, and we move on together.

  3. Gossip kills relationships. Women sitting around complaining about their husbands, men sharing jokes about wives, friends gossiping about the one who isn’t there. We might as well shoot ourselves in the foot, as the saying goes.

Only once in our 35-year marriage did we gossip about one another, and that was our darkest time. Fortunately we each realized the stories were of our own creation, and we let go of self-fulfilling prophecies that were killing the loving relationship we’d enjoyed for so long.

This habit is indeed the most dangerous one, and the cost is beyond measure. If you’re serious about breaking it, ask yourself, What can I do to break this habit? In addition, here are solutions that are working for me.

  1. Be aware of the pain I have caused others with my gossip.
  2. Let go of my stories about others, one by one, until they’re all gone.
  3. Be present and positive.

And let’s all remember the wisdom of Socrates:

Strong minds discuss ideas, average minds
discuss events, weak minds discuss people.

The One Factor In The Brexit Vote No One Is Talking About

The U.K.’s historic vote to leave the European Union, many people believe, was driven by opinions on immigration

And it likely was influenced by the way people are psychologically wired. Analysts on Friday repeatedly cited voters’ emotions as the driver of Brexit. Many people may have voted with fear or anger as their primary motivator, even though it had been well known that leaving could have widespread consequences, including economic turmoil and adverse effects on public health

“We are leaving the EU and entering a dark and uncertain period,”Gary Younge, editor-at-large for The Guardian, wrote after the “leave” vote won Thursday’s referendum. “Offered a choice between fear of the unknown or fear of the foreigner, fear inevitably won. Britain lost.”

Why do we fall for fear or anger-based arguments?

Brexit supporters argued for strict controls on immigration, and said Britain’s membership in the EU led to loose borders. The EU’s free-movement policy allows European nationals to live and work in any EU state without a work permit.

The anti-immigration outcry was heightened by the surge of migrants and refugees, including many from the war-torn Middle East. More than 1 million refugees have poured into Europe, primarily in the past year.

The vote shows deep worry about immigrants and what they mean for job security, safety and economic growth — fears that many consider xenophobic.

It’s not hard to see the fear in Brexit supporters’ tweets:

Political language that incites fear by spotlighting terrorism risks, for example, can sway conservative voters, researchers say. Fearful voters are prone to choosing an outcome based on new information, often abandoning their previous loyalties or affiliations.

Many Brexit voters may have felt neutral or even uninformed about the EU, the alliance they voted to leave. The day after the referendum, many UK residents were Googling, “What is the EU?”

Those who are angry are less likely to be invested in the political status quo and the options available to them. Studies show angry voters tend to be partisan and unreceptive to points that conflict with their own, according to the American Psychological Association.

Emotions can rule in the voting booth

Psychologists are increasingly finding that emotions can play a major role in elections.

“Thinking and feeling go hand in hand. In any decision-making — including political decisions — how people feel about the information they’re being given is important,” Tereza Capelos, an expert in political psychology at Surrey University, told the BBC last year. “Emotions help people make decisions.”

Perhaps that’s why the Brexit decision was shocking. Those arguing for Britain to remain in the EU presented sensible reasons (public health, scientific research, the environment, the economy). But many people rejected those rational views and went with emotion. And for many, the result was devastating:

Europe isn’t the only place where fears and frustrations run amuck and influence voting. It’s happening in the U.S. as well, with Donald Trump riding his proposed ban on all Muslims from entering the U.S. to the Republican presidential nomination.

Of course, human nature is a complex construct. There are a lot of other psychological factors that can inform a person’s vote, from attack ads to a candidate’s physical appearance. But they all influence how an individual feels. That means emotions have a very large impact on important choices, like the Brexit referendum.

Fear and anger can have a lot of agency — but they don’t always make the best decisions. (You listening, America?)

Through My Own Eyes: Single Mothers and the Cultures of Poverty

Through My Own Eyes: Single Mothers and the Cultures of Poverty

Shirl is a single mother who urges her son''s baby-sitter to swat him when he misbehaves. Helena went back to work to get off welfare, then quit to be with her small daughter. Kathy was making good money but got into cocaine and had to give up her two-year-old son during her rehabilitation. Pundits, politicians, and social critics have plenty to say about such women and their behavior. But in this book, for the first time, we hear what these women have to say for themselves. An eye-opening–and heart-rending–account from the front lines of poverty, Through My Own Eyes offers a firsthand look at how single mothers with the slimmest of resources manage from day to day. We witness their struggles to balance work and motherhood and watch as they negotiate a bewildering maze of child-care and social agencies.

For three years the authors followed the lives of fourteen women from poor Boston neighborhoods, all of whom had young children and had been receiving welfare intermittently. We learn how these women keep their families on firm footing and try–frequently in vain–to gain ground. We hear how they find child-care and what they expect from it, as well as what the childcare providers have to say about serving low-income families. Holloway and Fuller view these lives in the context of family policy issues touching on the disintegration of inner cities, welfare reform, early childhood and pro-choice poverty programs.

Build, Bernie, Build!

The Sanders campaign compiled an email list with 130 million names, a donor list that produced over $ 200 million in contributions, and a volunteer army of millions of enthusiastic supporters. The Democratic Party wants these lists, that money and those supporters. Good luck.

The establishment Democrats still don’t get it. Bernie’s passionate supporters actually believe in his agenda, and they view the Democrat Party as deeply entangled with Wall Street and the top 1 percent. They are not going to volunteer for Hillary no matter what Sanders says.

Rather than parsing words in the party platform (that Hillary and the rest of the establishment Democrats can and will ignore at will) Sanders should concentrate on launching a new movement organization right now — one that would mobilize for his democratic socialist agenda. We need an organization dedicated to reversing runaway inequality that can serve as a home for the incredible energy and idealism of his supporters.

Immediately, this new organization would have two goals: 1) defeat Trump; and 2) organize a million people to come to the Washington mall shortly after the inauguration to press for free higher education and a Wall Street speculation tax.

Why a new organization?
This is the perfect time to launch a large-scale progressive alliance with an organizational presence in every state. We need organization not just spontaneous eruptions that flower and wilt. We can’t just tweet an end to runaway inequality. We’ll need to systematically fight for it over a long period of time. We need an organizational structure that brings us together and connects our many issue and organizational silos. We should be able to go to Patterson, Pensacola or Pasadena to attend a meeting of a common organization that fights to reverse runaway inequality.

Bernie’s army of volunteers and small donors would likely support such a formation in large numbers if they thought it would really carry on the fight for the Sanders agenda.

Defeating Trump
The first task of this new movement would be to dump Trump. Instead of making a “lesser-of-two-evils” argument, we should make a positive claim that the “political revolution” Bernie has ignited would flourish more if Trump were not president.

Not only would Trump be a colossal disaster for this country, but his victory would make it much harder to fight for a progressive agenda. Instead of pressing for free higher education and single-payer health care, we would be fighting rear-guard actions against Muslim profiling and the building of the wall.

We don’t need to develop amnesia about Hillary’s Wall Street ties to understand that her election would provide a better organizing terrain on which to build a more powerful progressive movement. This is our positive reason to defeat Trump.

Bring a Million to the Mall
Defeating Trump is not enough. We need to plan right now for bold actions to prove to Congress that the Sanders agenda has massive grassroots support. Can we bring a million people to Washington right after the inauguration to demand that Congress pass a financial speculation tax to fund free higher education? Could a Bernie-led progressive alliance raise the money for outreach and transportation? It’s doable but only if we plan for it starting now.

Imagine the signal this would send to Bernie’s young supporters. Here would be an opportunity to attack the debt shackles that enslave millions of students and their families. Young people are likely to come running from all directions.

But, wouldn’t this be a white movement?
Pundits like Paul Krugman still claim that Sanders cares only about individual inequality and fails to address inequality between ethnic and racial groups. Krugman asserts that Hillary gets racism and Bernie, with his universal programs, does not, and that’s why Hillary got so many more votes from people of color.

It’s time to put this canard to rest. The Sanders campaign overwhelmingly won the votes of those under-thirty including the majority of black, Latino and Asian young voters. Hillary received strong support from older voters of color. What does this say about race and voting? It says that race doesn’t explain very much. Age, not race, created the major differences in these voting patterns. There is every reason to expect that an ongoing Bernie-led movement would draw young people of all shades and ethnicities.

Can we really build a mass movement for economic and social justice?
Before the Sanders campaign, that question was not even on the table. But who would have predicted that Sanders, an avowed socialist, would nearly bring the Clinton machine to a grinding halt? Who would ever have predicted twenty plus primary victories and the raising of more money than any other candidate? It tells us something important: This is not the time to think small..

Runaway inequality will not fix itself. Reversing it requires a mass movement with staying power to bring the political revolution to fruition.

Bernie has field tested a new social democratic agenda. We now have a mass constituency for a financial transaction tax, free higher education, Medicare for All and an end to a corrupt campaign finance system. Americans are ready to break up the big banks and undermine the power of Wall Street.

But none of this will happen without resources, organization, and structured activities. It requires money, messaging and the ironclad will to build for the long run.

Of all these activities, the most difficult challenge may lie within ourselves. We cannot build if we don’t believe. Occupy Wall Street believed and it changed the dialogue of this country from austerity to inequality. Bernie believed and he put democratic socialism on the American agenda. But Occupy faded because it lacked sustainable organizational structures. And the Bernie moment could be just that if no organization follows.

This is the time.

ADVICE 26: Surviving a Long-Distance Relationship

(Questions have been modified for space and clarity.)

I’m in a relationship that is long-distance for the summer. I feel like you lose some emotional value when you communicate through text, but my boyfriend prefers to write out what he feels as opposed to talking about it. How should we communicate?

He’s a wonderful man, and we love each other and make each other happy. But it frustrates me that he’s nonchalant about how we spend our time together. If I suggest something, I never get a solid, “Yes, this is what I want.” It’s usually, “Sure,” or “I don’t care, whatever you want to do,” or “I don’t know, you decide.”

I’ve expressed that I dislike making the decisions, and that it feels like he does stuff with me regardless of whether he really wants to or not. His response was that while he doesn’t mind the activities we’ve done, they ultimately don’t matter; he simply wants to spend time with me.

Now we are back on break, and I’m the one to suggest when to Skype or talk. Should I address this with him, or am I overreacting?
–Marie; Scarsdale, NY

I’m going to answer your first question second, and your second question first.

No, I don’t think you’re overreacting. As my mother-the-therapist says, there’s no such thing as a wrong feeling. You are frustrated by something your boyfriend does — or doesn’t do — and that needs to be addressed. If it’s not, it’s going to end up lurking beneath the surface, breeding resentment and discontent.

Every relationship has its own equilibrium, and yours appears to be out of whack. You’re the one putting in all the effort, and I’m guessing it feels that if you didn’t, the only thing that would keep you a couple would be your Facebook status.

In a way, your boyfriend reminds me of me. Shortly after my now-wife, Emily, and I started dating, she asked me what I wanted — to eat, or watch on TV, or do on Saturday night, I don’t remember — and I replied with the dreaded, “Whatever you want,” like I was part of an arranged marriage in Zamunda.

Truthfully, I (idiotically) thought this was the ultimate expression of chivalry. I’m here, at your service, sacrificing my own needs to satisfy yours.

Emily did not see it this way. She couldn’t stand that answer, and she wasn’t shy about telling me so. It made her feel the same way it makes you feel — that I wasn’t invested in the relationship, and I was making her bear the full burden of it.

Of course, nothing could’ve been further from the truth. My indifference had nothing to do with Emily. As long as our weekend plans aren’t filled with my kryptonite — like, say, seafood meals and opera tickets — I generally do not care what we do or where we go, partly because I’m super low maintenance, partly because I don’t like the pressure of making the choice. It stresses me out. I take it too personally. I spend the whole time worried that the other person isn’t having a good enough time, as if their enjoyment is my responsibility. Which, when it’s your call, I guess it kind of is.

But hearing Emily’s frustration, I knew I had to change. It didn’t matter if I had to fake it, and it didn’t matter how uncomfortable it made me. I had to figure out a way to start making decisions. So I did.

Your boyfriend can do the same. But since he hasn’t yet changed, you’re well within your rights to bring it up again. Tell him exactly what bothers you, and exactly what you need. Leave no doubt.

I’d also suggest opening up to the idea of changing yourself. At least a little bit. When you’ve mentioned this topic in the past, think about what he said — that all he wants to do is spend time with you. That’s a pretty big deal. It’s a foundational pillar of any successful relationship, and I wouldn’t take that for granted.

So while he needs to adjust his behavior, it might be worth adjusting your expectations. There’s a happy medium somewhere in the middle.

As for how you should communicate when you’re apart, this is yet another dynamic in which your boyfriend and I are alike. While I agree that emotions can get lost in texts/emails, I am not a fan of the phone. I can’t stand small talk, and when it comes to more important discussions, I like having time to think about what I want to say.

Traditional Skype conversations are even more awkward, because it’s just a phone call where the other person can see that you’re sitting in your underwear.

I’m much more comfortable being face to face, enjoying a shared experience, when every pause isn’t filled with stress. Which is why a few years ago when Emily and I spent four months doing long-distance, we’d coordinate Skype dates that coincided with the airings of our favorite shows. We each sat on our respective couches, and she’d watch on her TV while I’d watch on mine.

It was the perfect solution for us, and it could be the perfect solution for the two of you — an activity you can do together that’s already been suggested and scheduled.

Medicare Survey Could Be Contributing To Opioid Epidemic

2016-06-23-1466723097-8462432-HealthcareCostsPhotobyuserImagesMoneyonCreativeCommons.jpg
Photo by Creative Commons user Images Money. “Healthcare Costs.”

The nation’s addiction to opioid drugs claimed greater than 28,000 lives in 2014-nearly four times more than they did in 1999–and more than half involved prescription drugs. The tragic growth in opioid-related deaths is not an aberration; it’s part of a 15-year-long trend the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says is now a “national epidemic.”

Researchers have identified numerous contributing factors related to the opioid crisis, including the changing dynamics of the doctor-patient relationship, the creation of more potent and long-acting drugs, and trends started by influential medical experts and academic societies in the late 1990s suggesting total pain control should be treated as an attainable medical ideal–the so-called “fifth vital sign.”

While these concerns are all worthy of significant attention, a seemingly harmless government survey of patient satisfaction may be one of the most overlooked and important causes behind the current opioid epidemic. The survey, the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS), is administered by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. It was created in 1995 as part of the federal government’s efforts to provide consumers with objective metrics for evaluating health care service providers and to create a way to hold providers accountable for the quality of their diagnoses, treatments, communication, and the comfort provided to patients.

In 2005, the Deficit Reduction Act was passed, requiring HCAHPS scores to be used as a standardized evaluation of health care providers and systems when issuing Medicare reimbursements. Provisions contained within the Affordable Care Act in 2010 further tied reimbursement rates to HCAHPS survey results.

Proponents of these measures state that providing greater transparency for consumers and incentivizing hospitals and other providers to compete with one another simultaneously lowers costs and improves quality and patient satisfaction. But one important and detrimental unintended consequence of HCAHPS and other similar mandates is they encourage physicians and other health care professionals to place a higher value on certain measures of satisfaction–notably pain management–that may put patients at risk.

In addition to assessing the quality of communication from the health care team and the environment of a patient’s room, the HCAHPS survey asks respondents to score a provider’s success at managing pain. There are several questions completely dedicated to pain, including, “How often was your pain well controlled?” and “How often did the hospital staff do everything they could to help you with your pain?”

Controlling a patient’s pain is undoubtedly a crucial part of practicing medicine, but survey questions such as this one have encouraged providers to treat patients with ever-higher dosages of opioids, the consequences of which have proven to be extremely dangerous. Since 1999, the amount of prescription opioids sold in the United States has nearly quadrupled, and opioid-related deaths have risen at a similar rate over the same period. Amongst those addicted to heroin, greater than 70 percent report abusing prescription opioids prior to using heroin.

The phrase “do no harm” may be more complicated than it appears on the surface. Doctors are faced with the challenge of curing patients and treating their pain, but they must also avoid unsafe prescribing practices that could lead to drug tolerance, addiction, or both. The HCAHPS survey inadvertently adds to this dilemma by making patients’ pain management effectively more important than their long-term health.

Providers should always work to find new and effective ways to treat pain, especially now that over one-third of Americans suffer from chronic or acute pain. It is up to the health care community to become responsible stewards for this widespread problem. Providers should emphasize non-opioid classes of pain medications and other holistic strategies for pain management, as well as push for more drug-monitoring programs.

Unfortunately, achieving these goals is made much more difficult as a result of the external pressures placed on providers by government-mandated hospital score ratings such as those produced by HCAHPS, especially when they are used to determine monetary reimbursements.

Your Pregnancy Week by Week: Updated 6th Edition

Your Pregnancy Week by Week: Updated 6th Edition

Pregnancy should be a time of wonder and hope, but these days, it’s associated more often with paranoia. Dr. Glade Curtis is keenly aware of the anxieties heaped upon expectant women: he has written several pregnancy-related books. So while he covers pretty much any topic that an expectant mom might be concerned about, he does not overload the reader with extraneous information or horror stories that can be found in that other best-selling pregnancy guide. In this completely revised and updated edition, Curtis describes the physical developments from weeks 1 through 40–or 41 or 42!–such as the size and weight of the baby, emotional changes in the mother, typical medical tests offered, and nutritional requirements. (The iron found in prenatal vitamins may exacerbate morning sickness, he writes, because iron supplementation is usually not needed until the final trimester.) It is too bad that Dr. Curtis does not recommend more alternative-medicine approaches for treating common pregnancy discomforts. In the chapter covering Week 8, he rightly describes sciatic-nerve pain as excruciating, but does not advise yoga or chiropractic treatments for its relief. However, he *is* hip to the use of doulas, or labor coaches, he encourages breastfeeding, and includes numerous tips for making your partner feel included in what should be a thrilling experience for you both. –Erica Jorgensen

Rory McIlroy Pulls Out Of Olympics Over Zika Fears

By Adrian Warner

LONDON (Reuters) – Northern Ireland’s four-times major winner Rory McIlroy has decided to pull out of the historic golf tournament at the Rio Olympic Games in August because of health fears over the Zika virus.

“After speaking with those closest to me, I’ve come to realize that my health and my family’s health comes before anything else,” the world number four said in a statement on Wednesday.

“Even though the risk of infection from the Zika virus is considered low, it is a risk nonetheless and a risk I am unwilling to take.”

The International Golf Federation (IGF) said it was disappointed with McIlroy’s decision.

The 27-year-old was due to represent Ireland, rather than Britain, at the Games and his withdrawal is the latest blow to golf, which is returning to the Olympics for the first time since 1904.

A number of big names, including Fiji’s Vijay Singh and Charl Schwartzel of South Africa, have also withdrawn because of the virus.

Controversy over the Aug. 5-21 Games has grown as more becomes known about Zika. The mosquito-borne virus can cause crippling birth defects and, in adults, has been linked to the neurological disorder Guillain-Barre.

Last week, the World Health Organisation (WHO) said that the Games did not need to be moved or postponed because there is “a very low risk” that holding the event in Brazil will cause further spread of the virus.

An expert WHO panel on Zika concluded that staging the event during the Brazilian winter means the mosquito population will be smaller and intensified mosquito-control measures in place around venues “should further reduce the risk of transmission”.

MIXED RESPONSE

Medical experts had a mixed response to McIlroy’s decision.

Derek Gatherer, a virus expert at Britain’s Lancaster University, said if the golfer was “contemplating becoming a father within a year or so, then it was a perfectly reasonable precaution to stay away from regions of active Zika transmission”.

But Jonathan Ball, a professor of molecular virology at the University of Nottingham, said: “Obviously I don’t know the reasons for this decision, but it does strike me as being extreme.

“The chances of being infected by the Zika virus is low, especially if you protect yourself from mosquito bites by covering up and using a good insect repellent.”

But there are clearly worries in the golf world. Earlier this month, world number one Jason Day expressed doubts for the first time over whether he would compete and the virus was a hot topic of conversation among golfers at last week’s U.S. Open.

Masters champion Danny Willett, whose wife Nicole gave birth to their first child at the end of March, said he was excited about the Olympic Games but would not to go if his family’s health was at risk.

The list of Rio absentees also includes Australian world number eight Adam Scott and South Africa’s world number 14 Louis Oosthuizen, who both opted out over scheduling conflicts.

FROZEN SPERM

The connection between Zika and microcephaly first came to light last year in Brazil, which has now confirmed more than 1,400 cases of microcephaly that it considers to be related to Zika infections in mothers.

Britain’s Olympic long jump champion Greg Rutherford has decided to have his sperm frozen before the Games.

His partner Susie Verrill, who will not travel to Rio with their young son, said the couple had taken the precaution because they wanted to have more children.

McIlroy, who is engaged to American Erica Stoll, took a long time to decide who he would represent in Rio and threatened to skip the Olympics as he agonized over his choice between Britain and Ireland before opting for the latter in 2014.

“I trust the Irish people will understand my decision (not to go,” McIlroy added. “I will continue to endeavor to make my fans and fans of golf proud with my play on the course and my actions off it.”

Irish golf team captain Paul McGinley said McIlroy would have been a 100 percent certain pick for the Games but fully understood the reasoning behind the player’s withdrawal.

“It’s not for me to influence his decision, it’s a health decision he has discussed with his family and wife to be,” McGinley told Irish national broadcaster RTE.

“Shane (Lowry) and GMac (Graeme McDowell) are the next two in at the moment.”

In a statement the IGF said: “(We) are disappointed with Rory’s decision but recognize that some players will have to weigh personally a unique set of circumstances as they contemplate their participation in golf’s historic return to the Olympic Games in Rio, with the Zika virus foremost among them.”

Here’s Proof That Donald Trump Really Sucks At Math

While Donald Trump takes heat for his policies on the presidential campaign trail, Mother Jones just unearthed some evidence that his math skills aren’t quite up to snuff either.

Watch Trump incorrectly multiply 17 x 6, arriving at 112 as the answer. The correct answer is 102. Then watch him gloat that he got 112 under the misguided notion that he outsmarted his children, Ivanka and Donald Jr.

This math-block moment hails from a 2006 visit to Howard Stern’s radio show, MJ reports. Trump’s kids bragged in the clipped that their dad couldn’t buy their way into Wharton and that they had to earn entry on their own merits.

It’s then that Stern launches the pop quiz. In all fairness, doing even relatively easy multiplication might be tough with an audience. But you’d think at some point that one of the Trumps might come up with the right answer.

President Barack Obama told Jay Leno on “The Tonight Show” in 2012 that he was no math whiz either, but we doubt he’d get stumped on 17 x 6.

Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liar, rampant xenophoberacistmisogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims — 1.6 billion members of an entire religion — from entering the U.S.

ADVICE 25: I’m Dating A Married Man

On the silver anniversary of ADVICE, allow me to say thank you to everyone for reading and to those who have shared their personal lives in this public forum.

After all, this column wouldn’t exist without your questions, so please keep them coming.

To submit a question, fill out this impossibly brief Google form, then come back and read today’s answer…

(Questions have been modified for space and clarity.)

I went on a date with a guy and had a really good time. At the end of the night, he told me he was married. He said he felt bad and wanted to be honest with me. Yes, I was very upset, as I seem to attract married men. We still talk to each other on the phone and we do see each other two to three times a week at our sons’ baseball practices. I have told him several times that we cannot continue talking to each other, and he tells me his relationship with his wife is OK. He continues to contact me and tells me he wants me, but I don’t know if he really likes me. I know he can’t just break it off with his wife overnight — nor would he — but can he really feel something for me?
Jlag0307; Orlando, FL

In one of the first editions of this column, I explained how, in my answers, I wouldn’t be telling people what they should or shouldn’t be doing. Doing so would imply that I know best, and that’s not the case. I’m neither judge nor jury.

Instead, my goal is to paint a 360-degree picture of a situation, to present all viable options and resolutions — and then let the questioner decide on the proper course of action.

Unfortunately, with this question, I’m having trouble adhering to my mission statement.

This situation is bad all the way around. He’s married. Your sons play baseball together. I’m not sure there are two sides to this story.

I don’t mean to sound harsh or insensitive, but I don’t see how this is a relationship you can pursue. I get that it’s difficult to be lonely, and I get that when you find someone you like, you’re willing to do just about anything — and put up with just about anything — to hold onto that connection.

But do you really want to have an affair with the father of your son’s teammate? Before you wade too far into this, think about the potential consequences. Think about if this is what you want for your love story. Think about your son and the humiliation he stands to suffer if things go south. (And in all likelihood, it will go south.) Think about this guy’s wife and what it’d feel like to have someone cheat on you. Do you really want to be the other woman?

Not that it makes a difference, but this guy isn’t even saying he’s looking to leave his wife for you. In fact, he’s telling you the exact opposite. He’s telling you that his marriage is fine and that he’s not going anywhere.

Best-case scenario, he’s someone who should never have gotten married and is searching for his next side piece. Worst-case scenario, he’s a scumbag who takes advantage of unsuspecting women to get off, preying on their vulnerabilities in the bleachers during batting practice. Where’s the upside? Where’s the fairy-tale ending? Where’s the ending that results in anything but disaster?

Could he be feeling something for you? Sure. I guess. But I think the more appropriate question is: What does it matter?

Instead of focusing on him, let’s focus on you. You said you always attract married men — the very definition of the unavailable dream. Why do you think that is? Granted, given your son’s age and extracurricular activities, these are the guys you most frequently come across, so it could be a product of circumstance.

But if I had to bet, I’d say there’s more to it than that. I don’t believe you’re consciously pursuing other people’s husbands, but I do believe they keep showing up on your doorstep for a reason.

While I accept that there’s much in life we can’t control, I do think that the worlds we create for ourselves aren’t created by accident. They are often a reflection of our inner thoughts and beliefs. To a certain extent, our lives play out as a self-fulfilling prophecy.

So I’m wondering what’s making you invest in this toxic relationship. What purpose or void is it filling? Do you not believe you’re worthy of something better? Do you not believe you’re worthy of happiness? Deep down, is there something that’s convinced you that this is the best that you deserve?

I don’t know, and I’m not going to guess. In realigning with my mission statement for this column, I’ll let you be the one to decide.

Kev: Delivery Man

Kev: Delivery Man

Kev thinks for a moment. He’s the new guy. He has a rather vague background. Only his obvious skill and a desperate need on the part of the oil service company has given him a job in the first place. If he can make the flight, he’ll be in for as long as he can stay in one place. Kev says, “Let me check the weather myself; call you back.” Kev hangs up the phone and rolls out of bed. Kev gets up and stalks into the living room of the small house he has rented. He fires up the PC and the TV. The weather service news doesn’t look good. However, the weather ‘experts’ on this backward planet know very little. Kev has set up a weather simulation program on the surprisingly powerful little PC and he begins to feed in the latest data. Kev can see a possible window of opportunity in about an hour. If everything works out properly, he can get in and out with even a little safety margin! Kev mentally notes the key parameters. Kev calls the dispatcher back and tells him of the conditions. Kev will be willing to try the flight if the chopper is up 100% and the wind conditions hold steady as to direction and no higher than the current speed over the next hour. The dispatcher agrees to get the chopper ready and loaded. Kev goes back to the bedroom and gets dressed. He has a quick breakfast of the workout food called Metabolol. He drinks enough to fuel him for perhaps a couple of hours at high effort and then he pours the rest from the blender into a plastic, wide mouth bottle. He throws the capped bottle into a duffel bag and the blender container into the dishwasherKev then drives out to the facility where the oil company helicopters are kept. The wind buffets Kev’s car as he drives along the road. The weather is very bad and doesn’t look like getting better any time soon. Kev arrives at the heliport. The crew has prepared a helicopter, but their looks tell Kev that they don’t believe that he’s really going to try to fly it in the current weather. Kev walks out to look at things and th

Here’s Why Top Economists Forecast Gloom If Brexit Happens

The possibility that British voters will choose to leave the European Union on Thursday is prompting increasingly dire warnings from top policy makers that the move would be a financial catastrophe for the United Kingdom.

Are the doomsday predictions accurate, political fear mongering or something in between?

There is no telling exactly what will happen; a lot depends on how the country is able to renegotiate its relationship with its European neighbors. But the move carries significant economic risks for the U.K., and by extension, the world.

What European Union Membership Means

The European Union functions as a single market for trade and movement of people between its 28 member nations, and some other countries with close economic ties.

Not only are goods and services exchanged by those countries without tariffs, they also meet common product safety standards and other regulations.

The EU’s “passporting” system allows member nations’ banks to lend into, and set up branches in, all of Europe, so long as they comply with regulations in their home country.

And each country in the EU is required to admit migrants from within the union who have moved there to seek work.

If a majority of British voters choose to “leave” the EU, opting for a so-called British exit or “Brexit,” it would not sever all of these ties overnight. British Prime Minister David Cameron would invoke Article 50 of the EU’s Lisbon treaty — the clause for a country trying to leave the union — setting off a two-year period in which the U.K. would negotiate the terms of its exit with the EU. If no agreement is reached, the U.K.’s membership would simply expire with nothing in its place. After that, negotiating a free trade deal of the kind the EU has with other non-EU countries like Canada, could take several additional years.

The Economic Risks Of Brexit

The economic concerns about a Brexit center on both the final result of the transition out of the EU and the destabilizing effect of the process in itself.

Brexit opponents, which include the vast majority of the country’s mainstream economists and economic policy makers, believe that the move would likely result in significantly less trade between the U.K. and Europe. Since nearly half of U.K. exports went to the EU in 2014, and a majority of its imports came from there, a drop-off in trade would have a negative impact on the U.K. economy, Brexit opponents argue.

The EU has little desire to make the process easy for the UK, since it wants to dissuade other countries from going down a similar path and slowly unraveling the entity.

So even if the EU grants the U.K. tariff-free trade, these critics expect, new non-tariff barriers such as regulatory asymmetry and the absence of financial “passporting” could reduce commercial flows.

Even once a new free trade agreement is reached, “the costs of accessing the Single Market would still be higher than they are now after that time,” the Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development wrote in an April report on the possible impact of Brexit.

The OECD, which represents the world’s wealthiest nations, estimates that by 2020 a Brexit would reduce Britain’s gross domestic product by more than 3 percent.

“It is a leap into the unknown,” said Kevin Featherstone, head of the European Institute at the London School of Economics. “We cannot possibly know what jobs would be lost or remain after a Brexit.”

Paul de Grauwe, chair of European political economy at the London School of Economics’ European Institute, and an opponent of Brexit, nonetheless conceded that some predictions of a Brexit-induced catastrophe are over the top.

“It is possible to generate a trade arrangement that is not that much different than deal they have today,” he said. “The uncertainty is in whether they can hammer it out.”

We cannot possibly know what jobs would be lost or remain after a Brexit.
Kevin Featherstone, London School of Economics

Adam Posen, the president of the Peterson Institute for International Economics and a former member of the Bank of England’s monetary policy committee, predicted that Brexit could prompt car manufacturers and financial service companies to leave the country rather than deal with new trade barriers and “an unnecessary amount of uncertainty.”

In the interim, while talks are under way, there is the risk that investors will sell British stocks and other holdings in the British Pound, as they look to keep their money in a safer place.

The London Stock Exchange has been declining and the value of the pound fluctuating in response to Brexit fears in recent weeks. News that the “remain” side has gained in the polls prompted a rally in both indices on Monday.

Mark Carney, governor of the Bank of England, the U.K.’s central bank, said in May that the economic shock from a “leave” vote “could possibly include a technical recession.”

Those risks have policy makers in other countries worried about the impact that a Brexit could have on a global economy still reeling from a slowdown in demand in China and other emerging market economies. In the U.S., Brexit could boost the value of the dollar as investors seek a safe haven. That would make U.S. exports less competitive, which could have a negative impact on the job market.

Federal Reserve chairwoman Janet Yellen cited the prospect of a Brexit as “one of the factors” behind the Fed’s Wednesday decision not to raise its benchmark interest rate.

It is not just top economists who oppose a Brexit, however. The U.K.’s Labour party and the trade unions closely associated with it are campaigning against the move as well.

In addition to their fears about how the economic shock of a Brexit will affect U.K. workers, the country’s labor movement worries that leaving will enable the U.K. to adopt lower standards for workers. And leading British environmentalists are concerned that the U.K. would not prioritize maintaining the EU’s environmental standards.

The U.K. has long been more economically conservative than its continental neighbors, favoring less regulation and public spending and lower taxes. A May report by the U.K.’s Trades Union Congress, a major labor federation, notes that until Britain joined the EU, U.K. law did not ensure that women got equal pay for equal work or received paid vacation if they were part-time workers. And joining the EU enabled British women dismissed from their jobs because of a pregnancy to immediately seek justice, rather than wait two years before doing so, according to the report.

“If we left the EU, it would be a long re-negotiation process and it would be up to this Conservative government to decide which rights to jettison and keep,” said Antonia Bance, the TUC’s head of campaigns and communications. “In time, we could lose some of the labor rights we cherish. That would be a disaster for working people and continues to be why we tell working people to vote ‘remain’ on Thursday.”

So What Is The Economic Case For Brexit?

Brexit proponents argue that leaving the EU could allow for free trade with Europe without having to deal with the continent’s burdensome regulations, open immigration and distant bureaucracy. They envision it being like the U.K.’s relationship with other countries in the World Trade Organization with whom they have tariff-free trading.

Gerard Lyons, co-chair of the group Economists for Brexit, who advised former London mayor and top Brexit proponent Boris Johnson, acknowledged that it “would be difficult to avoid a temporary shock.”

Lyons likened the short-term negative impact to the Nike “swoosh” logo: a brief dip followed by a robust upward trajectory.

Patrick Minford, a professor of applied economics at the Cardiff Business School, who, together with Lyons, co-chairs Economists for Brexit, called the widespread predictions that Brexit would result in calamity “nonsense.”

The projections of doom from the OECD, Bank of England and other official institutions, he argued, assume an erection of trade barriers that is very unlikely to occur.

A key belief underpinning the rosier economic assumptions of Minford, Lyons and other so-called Brexiteers is that the U.K. has far more leverage over the EU to shape its future ties than EU officials and other Brexit opponents are willing to let on.

The EU may have tariff-free trade among its member nations, but, directly or indirectly, it taxes imports of manufactured goods and agricultural products from outside the EU. Eliminating the EU’s “tariff wall,” as Lyons calls it, would allow the U.K. to trade freely and competitively with the entire world, something that would ultimately be a net advantage for the U.K.

The biggest thing [London’s financial district] has got to fear is regulation by the continent, which is anti-Anglo-Saxon finance.
Patrick Minford, Cardiff Business School

Freer trade with non-EU countries would give Britain the leverage to negotiate new free trade agreements with the EU, according to the Brexiteers. Outside the EU, the U.K. would be free to import cheaper cars from Asian countries, for example. To avoid a situation where they have to sell cars to the UK at lower prices, Germany in particular will try to secure a new trade agreement on cars as soon as possible, Minford claimed.

And the increased competitiveness of sectors like finance allowed by less regulation will offset any reduction in trade activity with the EU, Minford and Lyons argue.

Lyons cited the EU’s cap on bankers’ bonuses as an example of EU regulations holding back London’s bustling financial service industry. Minford expressed a similarly negative view of EU finance rules.

“The biggest thing [London’s financial district] has got to fear is regulation by the continent which is anti-Anglo-Saxon finance,” Lyons said.

There is precedent for non-EU countries — such as Norway and Switzerland — being part of EU’s single market.

Even if the EU were politically amenable to such an arrangement, there is a Catch 22 in Britain becoming more like Norway, the country most often cited as a model. In order to qualify for Norway’s status, the U.K. would likely have to incorporate the very EU regulations into its domestic law that so many Britons hope to be free from through Brexit.

Norway has passed laws incorporating some three-quarters of EU legislation, according to a 2012 Norwegian government report. At the same time, the report notes, Norway lacks a say in the law making process.

The EU “will not be willing to accept the U.K. being the big exception to the single market,” the London School of Economics’ De Grauwe said. “So the U.K. will have to accept common regulation.”

Brexit Is Really All About Immigration Any Way

Of course, much of the energy behind the pro-Brexit campaign has been driven by anger over the EU’s immigration policy, rather than its direct economic impact. For many Brexit advocates, control over Britain’s borders is a principle worth fighting for over the long term, regardless of the short-term challenges it would create. There is a perception, largely not supported by the facts, that the inflow of immigrants from poorer EU countries, like Poland, Romania and the Baltic states, is straining public resources and depressing the wages of native-born workers.

European immigrants who arrived between 1995 and 2011 were a net fiscal gain for the U.K., according to a report by the Centre for Research and Analysis of Migration. Though even economists opposed to Brexit acknowledge that the nationwide benefits do not preclude migration from causing greater fiscal strain in individual towns, particularly in rural areas.

Anger over immigration has raised the fortunes of anti-EU demagogues like Nigel Farage, a member of the European parliament and head of the U.K. Independence Party. Farage is under fire for a pro-Brexit poster UKIP produced that features an image of asylum seekers from the Middle East crossing into Europe with the words “Breaking point: the EU has failed us all.”

(Being in the EU has not stopped Britain from heavily restricting entry by Middle Eastern refugees.)

Minford and Lyons, both self-described believers in free trade and free markets, distance themselves from the populist claims of Farage and those he represents. They acknowledge the enormous benefits that the U.K. has reaped from immigration.

But the economists believe it is Britain’s right to create its own immigration system to admit skilled workers, rather than unskilled ones, not unlike the models that are in place in the U.S. and Australia. Foreign workers with lower skills and lower earnings strain public resources, even when they do not receive direct cash benefits, they maintain.

“Migration is good news for the country, but we do not have a sensible migration policy,” Lyons concluded.

Life Lessons From King James

2016-06-20-1466459952-8369230-lebrondunkklay.jpg

LeBron James might or might not be the greatest basketball player of all time. It’s a pointless discussion, for now, because his career isn’t even close to being over.

He’s probably cemented his legacy as one of the greatest players of all time – 3 championships, 3 Finals MVPs, 4 regular season MVPs, and defeating a 73-9 team in the Finals after being down 3-1 while leading everybody in everything and bringing a championship to a city that hasn’t seen one in 52 years will do that.

I have to admit something though. After game 4 – after an odd and frustratingly passive performance from LeBron James, I’d given up on him. I just didn’t think he could do it. LeBron wasn’t playing like the absolute best version of LeBron – which the Cavs needed him to do if they were even going to have a chance – and the next game was at Golden State.

I thought it was over. And I thought it was LeBron’s fault. And I was irrationally angry and upset.

There’s a quote from former NFL coach Bill Parcells that I like:

“You are what you are.”

I thought Game 4 LeBron was LeBron. Passive, not quite willing to do what it takes, a waste of potential. I know – he was already a two-time champion. But two-time champions are supposed to play like two-time champions, aren’t they? And he wasn’t. He was playing like someone less than that.

I don’t need to tell you what happened next. But I will anyway.

Back to back 41-point games, when scoring isn’t even the thing he does best. Three straight wins against the greatest regular season team of all time, a team that hadn’t lost 3 in a row all season. Two wins on the road, in a building where the Warriors went 39 – 2 in the regular season. Leading everybody in everything – points, rebounds, assists, blocks, steals, which was literally unheard of. His stats in the last three games: 36.3 points per game, 11.7 rebounds per game, 9.7 assists per game, 3.0 blocks per game, and 3.0 steals per game.

Game 5 to 7 LeBron had clearly, well and truly, undeniably vanquished Game 4 LeBron.

Because he had to. Because if winning meant more to him than anything else, including being “himself”, he had to.

It’s like that quote from Henry Sidwick:

“One has to kill a few of one’s natural selves to let the rest grow — a very painful slaughter of innocents.”

And this is what LeBron said after the game, about coming back to Cleveland two years ago, knowing the team had never even been to the playoffs before:

“I told myself, ‘Bron, you gotta be patient’… but I’m not a patient guy.”

He didn’t say he could be patient. Or that he should be patient. Or that he wants to be patient.

He said he had to be patient.

Which meant he had to be something he hadn’t been.

Because his goal – “I set a goal to bring a championship back to the city of Cleveland” – meant more to him than remaining who he was.

I could learn from that. Maybe I’ll have to learn from that.

Here’s what else we have to learn from LeBron James:

“I gave everything that I had. I put my heart and my blood and my sweat and my tears into this game.”

How often do you do that? When I think about that sentence, I honestly kind of doubt it. Can anyone literally give everything they have to anything? I don’t know. Maybe I doubt that anyone could do it because I doubt that I could do it. But I’ve probably, realistically, only felt this way a few times in my whole life. Even though it’s one of the most satisfying feelings I’ve ever had.

“I think about all the doubters. Even with what I’ve been able to do in my career, I still have the same doubters.”

Really, it’s insane that one of the greatest players ever, a three-time champion, a four-time MVP, has doubters. It’s not logical, it’s emotional. Nobody’s career has been scrutinised like LeBron’s – it started when he was on the cover of Sports Illustrated at 16, and it hasn’t stopped since. He has, somehow, against all odds, been even greater than his hype. And people still doubt him. If he still has doubters, then you do too, and you always will.

“During the playoffs, I get off social media. I don’t watch TV. I don’t listen to the radio. Because at the end of the day, the game is won in between these four lines. You can have everybody else talking, everybody else saying what’s going to happen… but the game is won in between these four lines.”

Let everybody else talk. Let them say who’s going to win and who isn’t. Let them gossip about who’s better and who can’t rise to the occasion and who will fail. None of it matters. Not at all. Save your energy for your work.

“I’m my biggest critic.”

If you’re your biggest critic then nobody else can harm you. Your opinion of you means more to you than their opinion of you, so how could they harm you? Their words are just noise – sometimes distracting, but never compelling.

“You practice it every day. Just trust in what you’ve put into the game.”

I worry so much about my writing sometimes. Is it good enough? What if it isn’t? How can I know it’s good enough? When will it be good enough? It’s not good enough. This is shit. Nobody is going to care. And they’ll be right.

It’s exhausting. What’s the point in it? Wouldn’t I be better served by putting my energy into actually writing?

I write every day. Usually for hours. I read every day too. I put a lot of time into it. I put a lot of effort into it. I put a lot of me into it.

I need to get better at trusting myself, and I need to realise that “ego is the enemy” of trusting myself (thanks Ryan Holiday).

“We’ve been through so much adversity these last two years, so I just knew what we were capable of.”

Are you like me, in that you think you can accomplish things without any kind of adversity? I know we all “know” we’ll experience adversity. But do we actually know? Do we actually, with our whole hearts, accept it?

What would happen if we did wholeheartedly accept it? Would there be any downside to that?

Adversity makes us more of who we are because it tests who we are. If we want to get through it, we have to be more. We have to become more. We have to turn adversity to advantage.

Nobody, after they win an NBA championship, says it was easy. Nobody, after writing a book, says it was easy. Nobody, after accomplishing something they desperately wanted to accomplish, says it was easy.

They all talk about how hard it was. How many sacrifices they made. How they wondered whether or not they could actually do this thing that was looking closer and closer to being impossible.

Do you know what else they all say?

They all say it was worth it.

“Cleveland, this is for you.”

We’re back to that cliché of a question, aren’t we.

What’s your why?

It’s a cliché because it’s important.

Is your why big enough to carry you into and through and beyond adversity?

Is it big enough for you to work when you don’t feel like working?

Is it big enough for you to ruthlessly kill the old versions of you that aren’t up to getting the job done?

LeBron James’ why wasn’t about LeBron James.

LeBron James’ why wasn’t even about Cleveland.

LeBron James’ why was Cleveland.

It’s why he came back. It’s why he felt obligated to come back. It’s why he was able to will his team back from a 3-1 deficit against the greatest regular season team in NBA history. It’s why he was able to make history. It’s why he was able to do what he said he was going to do.

It’s why the Cleveland Cavaliers, despite all odds, are the 2016 NBA Champions.

An Open Letter to My Former Psychiatrist: On Being Right

Dear Dr. Right,

You were right. Ten years ago this August, I left your office with my husband, round belly bulging with my nearly full-term first child, cursing your name. It was our first appointment together and you basically told me I was going to fail. When I explained to you that I had been off meds and symptom-free from my bipolar disorder for almost a year and that I wanted to stay off medication to breastfeed, you nodded with a sympathetic smile on your face, scribbled in your notebook and simply said we needed to have a plan.

A plan for which hospital I’d go to when I became manic to the point of needing that level of care. That level of care that you were so sure I’d need.

You were right.

At that stage of my fight, Dr. Right, I was still in denial about the fact that I had been diagnosed with a mental illness. I thought maybe, just maybe, since I had nearly a full year of stability without meds, the past had been a misdiagnosis. Perhaps those eight psychiatrists I had seen over the years since my two hospitalizations for mania were all wrong. I mean, I hadn’t experienced any significant episodes of depression or mania since 2006 and most importantly, I felt solid and stable. Didn’t that count for anything?

Didn’t that make me normal again?

I was so excited to be a mom and every spare moment I had was spent preparing for this new little life who would soon enter the world. His crib was set up, clothes had been washed and lovingly put away, and diapers and wipes sat waiting on the changing table in his nursery. One of the last things on my list was meeting with you, a psychiatrist who agreed to treat me without medication for the remainder of my pregnancy and beyond, according to my wishes.

Man, am I glad we met when we did. Because you were so right. And when the time came, four weeks after his birth, when the compounded lack of sleep and absence of meds in my bloodstream caught up to me in the form of full-blown postpartum psychosis, my husband had someone to call for help.

He called you.

How terrifying it must have been for him to see me unravel the way I did. How helpless he must have felt watching me slowly lose touch with reality, my eyes glazing over, unable to focus on the simplest task of taking a shower or eating a bowl of cereal. And when the psychosis reached its peak, he saw me scrambling to pull together every journal I had ever written in, piling them up before the blazing gas fireplace in our family room like an offering before I died. My legacy, scrawled in ink for my son to read someday since in my mind, I wasn’t going to make it back to the surface. I was hurling to the depths of hell which to me felt like being dragged to the floor of the ocean, my ankles cuffed with a ball and chain pulling me to the bottom. I was sinking faster than I could breathe. And I was so scared it was my day to die and I’d never see my baby again.

Mania to the point of psychosis can do this to a person.

I was taken under a Temporary Detention Order to the Emergency Room where I was held handcuffed to the bed. The doctors and nurses eventually determined I was a threat to myself or others and the green light was given to find me a bed. I was lucky, beds aren’t always available, as the Deeds’ family tragedy unfortunately proved. I only had to wait overnight and the next morning I was transferred to our local hospital’s geriatric psych ward, the only open bed in the surrounding area.

I made it through. It wasn’t easy, in fact, it was pretty awful being in a psych ward for a week of my new baby’s life. My mental illness had landed a forceful blow to the gut, showing me it was in control of my body. Still, wandering the halls at night I’d stumble, groggy from the antipsychotics, to the nurses station to ask for another dose of whatever sleeping pill they could give me. I knew sleep was my friend in there. After a week, I got well with your help, and with support from my husband and family.

Once home, I focused on getting stable. I followed my treatment plan and took my meds religiously. Then it happened again. I thought I knew what was best for my next baby. I didn’t. Acute mania reared its ugly head to the point of psychosis, repeating the nightmare a year and a half later when I found out I was pregnant with my daughter because I had stopped my medication.

You were right again. At five weeks pregnant I landed in the psych ward again.

Those days are tough for me to look back on, the times I was in the hospital and the weeks and months of recovery afterwards. But I wouldn’t trade them for anything because they are a part of who I am now and they tell the story of how I’ve evolved. Those slices of my life do not define me, but when added into everything else that makes me the person I am today, I am grateful for those agonizing, terrifying, heart-wrenching experiences.

You are the expert when it comes to psychiatry, Dr. Right. Me, I’m just the patient. During one of our sessions, I brought up whether or not to disclose my mental illness, and I asked for your opinion. Of course only I could make that call. You expressed the same sadness that so many in this world share over the injustice mentally ill people experience when they expose their conditions. I was looking for justification that it would be okay if I wrote openly about what I had been through, but I didn’t get that from you. In fact, you recommended that I keep my illness hidden, lest I be discriminated upon because of it. Once more, it was as if I were hearing “destined to fail” all over again.

Good thing I didn’t listen that time.

I’m writing now, Dr. Right. Remember when I told you I wanted to write a book? Well, I still do, but first I’ve started self-publishing online, to gain experience. I have a blog, and over the past two years my readership has grown tremendously, all organically, due to my dedication to sharing my story in order to help others.

I’ve met so many incredible people through blogging and social media. It blows my mind how I can write about the struggles I’ve gone through and in return, I get emails from people saying, “Me too!” and “Thank you so much for being so brave.” My heart is blissfully content because I know I’ve uncovered my purpose in life and my words are having an impact on people, a positive impact. I can feel it. And every time I put my thoughts out there for the world to read, my voice grows a little stronger.

I’ve created a show and non-profit organization called This Is My Brave where others like me who live with mental illness can stand up on stage and share our personal stories, our suffering and our breakthroughs, the hope we’ve found in long-term recovery. This is our chance to show the world our vulnerability in an effort to raise awareness and acceptance.

For years after I was handed my diagnosis I feared the backlash of people who knew me finding out about my mental illness. Conversations were uncomfortable, I cared too much about what other people thought of me. It didn’t take me very long to realize that living in fear is not really living. Taking off my armor and choosing to expose myself and my story was one of the best decisions I ever made about my mental health and my life in general.

Revealing my vulnerability freed me to follow my dreams.

And I have you to thank. Thank you for being right. Thank you for letting me fall. Thank you for being there when I needed you. Finally, thank you for doubting me and advising me to stay silent. Because I needed my chance to prove someone wrong and you were that person for me.

Respectfully yours,
Jennifer Marshall (your patient from 2008-2011)

Through My Own Eyes: Single Mothers and the Cultures of Poverty

Through My Own Eyes: Single Mothers and the Cultures of Poverty

Shirl is a single mother who urges her son’s baby-sitter to swat him when he misbehaves. An eye-opening–and heart-rending–account from the front lines of poverty, "Through My Own Eyes" offers a firsthand look at how single mothers with the slimmest of resources manage from day to day. Holloway and Fuller view these lives in the context of family policy issues touching on the disintegration of inner cities, welfare reform, early childhood and "pro-choice" poverty programs.
